Preview window look may differ from final avi capture.
The rule is that procamp should be set to avoid levels that your card cannot capture.
For example USB-Live 2 cannot capture illegal 0-16 levels, so if your tape/vcr/camera provides such range, you should tune brightness/contrast in procamp to stay inside 16-XXX range.
The info about range is given by histograms; you cold check them in real time (see jagabo post here https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/401225-Histogram-for-Amarec-TV) or make some experiment recording some portion of the tape showing the worst case.
