Q: Why I convert my AAC to AC3?
A: My home theater can decode AC3 to 5.1 speaker. It cannot decode AAC directly.

Q: What is the advantage of this method?
A: This method use only 2 free tools: 1. Nero AAC decoder and 2. Aften
It don't require big .WAV file as intermediate (big file require time to write/read to/from Harddisk. It read AAC file and send wav stream to aften on the fly.

    Heres how:

    1. Download and put Nero AAC decoder and Aften to same folder of your choice.
    2. Create batch file containing:
    Code:
    NeroAacDec -if %1 -of - | aften -readtoeof 1 - %1.ac3
    3. Create a short-cut to this batch file.
    4. Drag and drop your AAC file to this short-cut.

Another good thing about NeroAacDec is, it can demux AAC from .mp4 on the fly, so if you have movie.mp4, you can drag and drop it to the short-cut, it will produce movie.mp4.ac3 for you. There is no need to manually demux AAC out of movie.mp4 before use.

Note: I ran into a problem once, NeroAacDec connot decode my mp4, so I use YAMB to make make it good mp4. Now NeroAacDec and decode it.

    Hi thanks for this method.

It seems very easy. I followed it as per your instructions but I am getting only a AC3 sound file created and no video with it. Can you help me, what am I doing wrong?

    Thanks

Have you considered using ffdshow to convert the audio on the fly? The signal is passed as AC3 to the receiver over the hdmi cable (it can also be passed over spdif cable).
Murphy's law taught me everything I know.

  10. Sorry to dig up an old topic, but I'm really tearing my hair out over this. Whenever I drag my aac files to the shortcut, the window opens, but nothing else happens, it just doesn't do anything. It does work as it should with mp4-files, so my batch file seems to be set up right. Did I misunderstand something?

    aacDECdrop? It says it's FAAD2-based AAC/MP4 drag'n'drop frontend.
    Thoughts?
