How come Microsoft Office Word 2016 has this thumbnail for "docx" compared to the "97-2003 word document" , which shows the "W" logo? The "docx" looks funny as its just a white sheet of paper without a "W". It will still use MSFT Word 2016 to open it when I click on it but the thumbnails looks like wordpad or something.
Even for the two different excel spreadsheet formats, both show the "X" logo.

Turn off Windows' "hide extensions for known file types" option and the answer will be obvious to you.

The Word, Excel, PPT apps, etc all have multiple icon resources built into the executables.
For example, Word might have the standard docx icon be resource #0, the dotx icon = #1, the doc icon = #2, the rtf icon #3, etc.
If you don't like it, or if another app process has usurped it from its normal setting, you can either tell Windows to restore Word to being the default app for all its claimed doc types, or you can surgically change each extension to be defaulted by a particular app (like Word) if you don't want to mass change them. In doing so, you can choose the icon resource #.
And Read all that jagabo told you over again.
