continue 2pass h265 encoding after error and reuse analysis from 1st pass

[kleajmp]

I used MeGui to encode an uncompressed upscaled mkv into a H265 encoded mp4 with x265 2 pass profile. After completing the second pass MeGui gave some error and now I do not have an output mp4 file. The first pass was completed successfully so I hope I can reuse the generated stats file so I do not have to redo the whole encoding. It lasted 48h of 100% cpu...

Anyone with some advanced experience any tips what was the exact error and how I can resume my 2nd pass without starting all over?

It LOOKS like it output a usable HEVC file. Try muxing this file using MkvToolnix. Sometimes MeGUI completes the encode and doesn't multiplex correctly in my experience.

Well maybe you're right,
But one strange thing is the outputted files in the "xcuesyug.xeh" subfolder contain one .hevc file... when I play this I get this strange looking video:

I used multiple software to play it (normally I have the newest codecs installed), even casting it with chromecast gives a faulty video output on my tv.

file had extension .hevc so i guess this is an output file and not a "working file"?

"uncompressed upscaled mkv" => the MeGui log says the video is ProRes, depending on the ProRes format this might be a decoding issue in ffmpeg.
-> if ffplay can playback the file then it's not a decoding issue in ffmpeg but something different.

The upscaled video was indeed stored as ProRes by Topaz in a .mov container. I had to use ffmpeg to convert the container to mkv as MeGui cannot work with mov.
Then I used MeGUI to encode the upscaled.mkv with x265 which gave: h265.hevc and after I tried with x264 which gave: h264.mkv
I just tested if all files play with ffplay...

• upscaled.mov => plays well
• upscaled.mkv => plays well
• h265.hevc => plays faulty
• h264.mkv => plays faulty

so it is definitely en encoding issue, but what went wrong?
