im trying to figure out why nero vision is crapping out on me when i drag this video into it when converting to DVD-Video. i would like to drag the huff-yuv straight into nero vision, but it was locking up, then i tried to recompress the video into mpeg-2, then i tried to compress it into mpeg-1, both using variants on 4cc, (MPG, MPG2, etc..), none of this helped. after a fresh system boot i successfully was able to drag (load) the mpeg-2 into NV, so i dont know whats going on.

    heres the original file

I have made several adjustments in ffdshow 32bit encoders, trying libmpeg2, and libavcodec on all 3 MPEG formats (All MPEG, MPEG-1, MPEG2) none of this has made a difference either.

one thing i notice is in GSPOT, when i drag the MPEG1 encoded version into it, it always states the COdecs arent installed. the following is what i see in the GSPOT list for my codecs related to MPEG

We don't recommend the use of Nero so maybe others will comment on the questions related to using it for this purpose.

Why are you using MPEG-1? DVD has severe restrictions on the use of MPEG-1 video in DVD. Bit rates for MPEG-1 can only go up to 1.856 Mbps and VCD resolutions (352x240 NTSC and 352x288 PAL) are required.

i dont, i use huffyuv, and i was going to let nero convert and burn it straight from this. but when nero had problems loading the file, i thought i would tinker with the compression to troubleshoot this problem. after trying mpeg2, i thought i would just try mpeg1 to see if nero was just having problems with mpeg2. that didnt solve anything, same problem. but then i just had this plaguing problem that i always see when i load an mpeg1 in gspot, it says missing codec. those files do play on my pc, so im guessing its a gspot bug. i was hoping somebody could answer this.

as far as NERO, i hope somebody can tell me why the program persists to go non-responsive when i try to load this file into it, or any other compressed version of it, unless the system is freshly booted. Im suspecting codecs, but i only have ffdshow installed, which always works flawless so im leaning on a bad NERO installation, since i have messes with two versions on the same installation of windows 7, so they might have conflicting files installed or something ??

well, anyhow, back to the original question (with a bad choice in topic), what could be causing the file to be chucking knives into NERO vision's filestream? is there any obvious mistakes, or suggestions?

  6. I think jman kind of summed it up. Few if any of us use Nero -- it used to be a system suck, I'm told it's gotten better but have found no reason to revisit it.

If you're making DVDs you should be using mpeg2. If you're willing to consider alternatives to Nero, I'm impressed with AVStoDVD these days, as well as a number of paid options. MediaInfo is musch more commonly used here than gspot. Is your version up to date?

My not-so-wild guess is, the actual problem was/is Nero itself. I've seen various installs of Nero royally screw both DirectShow and VfW/ACM. The fact that Gspot couldn't detect an MPEG-1 decoder somewhat proves what I'm saying.

Bottom line is, friends don't let friends use Nero. If uninstalling it is not enough for fixing your operating system, then backup your documents, files and installers, and perform a clean re-install of the whole OS :–/

lol, thaks for the info. friends wont let friends install nero anymore. i think i agree, it was nero doing this. i use vdub for almost everything now.

my entire video editing suite as of late is vdub, ffdshow (an older version that contains mpeg1 and 2 codecs), acm codec, lame codec, and a couple plugins that allow vob files in vdub. its been working great. i use two pass encoding mpeg 4 for most things, and lame 192kbps, or acm for most files.

    thanks for the tips

I'm no longer surprised by much of anything around here. And they said VHS sucked.
