state the model of motherboard.....what chipset controller for the IDE is it using? Intel? Via? Nvidia? It does make a difference when it comes to optical drives. Also if you're using the ide cable that came with the pc/mobo buy a new one anyway......just my 2 cents!

You say you are using a new 80 wire IDE cable but also talk of jumpering your drives Mater/Slave. Why are you not using Cable Select?

This might be caused by windows 7 retarded AHCI driver.

Link > Choose either 32bit or 64bit ... extract to usb flash drive

    Then from a new install

    1: Chose "custom install" only

Under the screen that shows you the drives and where you want to install Win 7, there is a small check box (should be on left side below drive screen). Check it.

2: Select the Intel AHCI driver on the USB drive

    3: Continue till completed

    ----

However ... still need to sort that "no spin" drive issue before hand and make sure bios see's it.

Thanks Bjs. I'll try that. I downloaded STOR_all64_f6flpy_9.5.0.1037_PV.zip. Just waiting delivery of new LG optical drive.

Please give me a couple of days. I'll let you know how it goes.

    Thanks

  6. You're right, a functioning device that shows no indication of power on a new build is nothing at all to worry about.

By all means follow the advice you have been getting from folks that know absolutely nothing about your PC and your situation.

Good luck to you, I am done here.
