  1. i capture and edit clips with MTR and MPEG Streamclip for fair use.

i tried to burn clips (mov. file converted from VOB) with toast (old version 8.xx) and the clips came out with no image (just sound). i thought toast can burn both Video_TS folder and mov files..

when i tried to do the same with i-movie, there was an error sign, 'project validation.' when i ignored the sign and kept burning, it worked.
can anyone tell me what might be the cause?

    thanks in advance.

Toast will happily burn a bunch of .mov files. Select the DVD Video
tab. Drag your clips to the main window.

you have to first DEMUX the .VOB files, and then Remux them to a usuable
format, if that is what you want. Just using MpegStreamclip to
save as QT Movie will flatten the VOB, leaving just the audio,
as the audio is on top in a VOB and so it produces a movie
    with sound, no picture.

There are two ways to do what you want in the end result:
Make a DVD in Toast from your content.

    1. Easy

Save all the .VOB files into a folder. Use R-Name to rename the files
extensions en masse to .mpeg from .vob.

Once done, Open the Toast Video Tab window, select from DVD video,
and drag and drop the renamed VOBs into the window. Toast will
then accept them, and create your DVD.

    2. A bit Harder, but necessary if you must have .mov files.

Open the .VOB files in MpegStreamclip ( with the QT Mpeg-2 Addon installed).
Demux each file back into it's elementary streams ( .m1v and .ac3 audio
for example) back into a folder on the desktop.

Once done, open the first m1v file in QT Pro.
It should open without the corrosponding audio, just as a movie file with no sound.
Now, open the audio file in QT Pro.
Select the .m1v file, select all the video, and copy the video
    ( apple-a then apple-c)
Select the audio file, and paste the video scaled to the audio file
    (apple option shift v)
now that things are properly layered, NOW you can save as a QT movie

once that movie is saved, repeat for the others.
Now, take your movie files into Toast and burn them.

As you can see, you don't really need to convert the .VOBs into
anything else to get them just to go to Toast.
If you were wanting to get the VOBs say into iMovie or FCE/FCP
for further editing, I would suggest instead from MpegStreamclip,
saving (exporting) them out as DV Stream, as that is much more
compatible with the NLE softwares, and it takes care of
your flattening properly from the VOB, without extra steps.

  5. thanks so much.
i usu. save clips as mov files, show them off of my computer for presentation, and save them on an external hard drive. i only occasionally burn clips on DVD.
to save clips after editing with MPEG Streamclip, would you recommend to save them just as VOB file, or DV stream?

    me personally, DV Stream.
They can be played back in VLC, QT, MpegStreamclip,
and if I need to drop them into iMovie or FCP, they are
ready to use. Takes a little more space than .mov, but
worth it for short ( less than 30min) clips....
