Is there a way to play a VOB or ISO or whatever file that was ripped from a DVD on the default DVD Player (the player that comes with the computer) in an old imac without actually inserting the DVD?

I prefer it to VLC for playing telecined content...it seems to automatically do inverse telecine or something, since those interlaced frames that appear every few frames don't appear when I play it that way (whereas they do with VLC).

But I don't want to have actually insert the DVDs to play the content on that player, which is why I ripped it.

VLC will play the video_ts folder on the HDD pretty much the same as if the
DVD disk was inserted and playing from there.
Not sure if ISO has the same support, but it should play
    Didn't you try it?

The Apple DVD Player application on the iMac will play a VIDEO_TS folder and by extension mounted disk images. You can drag-and-drop a VIDEO_TS folder to the DVD Player application in the Dock to start playing. Alternatively, you can use the menus: File > Open DVD Media > (navigate to VIDEO_TS folder, select it, but don’t open it) > [Choose].
