    or are they like VHS in that they can be recorded over in either format?

    the reason i ask is that i can get 5 DV tapes here in the UK for £20 and send them to my girlfriend in the US, if they'll be compatible that is.

    I looked on my tapes, and nowhere does it say NTSC.

    So I would say they work with PAL and NTSC.

    But tapes cost even less in USA, so I can not see why mailing them
    would be a good idea?
