    Hi,
Iam new to VR. I was looking for some good player. My goal was to have impression to watch video in movie (just have this experience). There is plenty of them out, but for new users it is bit difficult choose one of the top. Just trial and error now. There are also lots of free, also free with buy inside application feature (which i don't want) and also not free but some are really cheap and looks very nice. Of course will not watch each movie in it, but sometimes it is handy.

So I think it can be very nice to have this section here in software. The technology isn't newest, and problem probably can be to get link to download software. Not sure. But can be nice for older people to have more details about VR players and details in one place before downloading them. To avoid bad or privacy leaking soft.
Also minimum specs can be mentioned, but it is usual i5-459x and GPU 970 Amd equivalent. But not always.

Just curious if this is somehow reasonable and possible. And if not, why.

    Thank you very much

    Hi,
yes this is bit problem. For example Oculus you have to be login to get links to oculus things.
So free but can't be linked from oculus
    Oculus Video
    Skybox VR video player https://skybox.xyz/en/
    Deo VR video player https://deovr.com/
    Gizmo VR VR player https://gizmovr.com/
Open VR video player https://chimera.digital/ Very poor rating/review
    Samsung VR videos https://samsungvr.com/
    MermaidVR video player https://www.mermvr.com/
    All above should be free.
Whirligig media player http://www.whirligig.xyz/ cost 4USD in early acess but look very promising.

I have oculus and oculus account. So got some pay software for free. But this is irelevant to VR players. They are mostly free. But as I mentioned, and you asked, for some you have to be login. It is for oculus video. And probably some others. Also I belive there can be more on steam. Steam supports more HTC vive, but it should works for both. So when you got oculus, you have to create account and get to store for free things. Or links Iam sending here. With HTC vive is it similar but steam account supposing. With WMR (windows mixed reality) probably similar with microsoft store.
Also I don't think usual mobile phones VR are supported because of specs. So there are 3 main VR now, Oculus rift, HTC vive and Windows mixed reality. It is not cheap thing. Cheapest is WMR than oculus which comes with some free paid software and then HTC vive, that comes with nothing.
Iam trying to say, it is something like Xbox or PS4. You are somehow connected with Microsoft or Playstation throught account to use this HW on max.

Iam still new to this technology. But it is really worth the price. Superb experience. For example in google earth VR, there are some breathtaking location. For example standing on the edge of something like Colorado Canyon or similar thing. But GEVR isnt most excating thing in VR... There are much better.

Searched for open source VR player, but it seems latest update two years ago and not seems to be active.

I have an Oculus Go. Much better than the smartphone VR adapters. It works well on my WiFi system with no connecting cables needed. About a 2 hour battery life. It also has corrective lens available for eyeglass wearers. This makes it a lot more comfortable to wear for some of us.

You can also stream from NetFlix or Amazon Prime, YouTube, Hulu and a few other providers. It has a web browser built in, so you can 'surf the net' also.

The visual interface controls seem a bit awkward, takes some getting used to.

I haven't really tried streaming video over my LAN from one of my PCs, but it looks to be workable.
I really wish it had a removable Micro SD card, but you are stuck with a onboard 32 or 64 GB memory that takes a while to transfer to.

I'm not a gamer, so I don't really do those apps.

In case you may be wondering whats inside these type of VR units, here's one teardown: https://mindtribe.com/2018/09/oculus-go-teardown/

    Hi Redwudz,
there is in developement of oculus first standalone thing. There is prototype. It will not needed PC at all. Will have Mobile processor for cell phones but created specially for this device, so not background task.
    https://www.cnet.com/news/oculus-quest-standalone-vr-coming-spring-2019-for-399-update/
Linked here, because you will have to login to oculus to see the page. Price is nice, and you know, it is not about pixels, but about experience.
But am bit sceptic about quest. My PC memory itself cost much, Cpu too and Gpu as well. So can't imagine what power it will have at this price.
Btw, cable isn't problem for me. Is very long and iam sure there is still power. Can buy wireless thing for rift coast about 200USD, but then iam addicted to power of battery.

I tried the Oculus Rift some year ago and wasn't that impressed.

How do you experience watching movies with the oculus go ? I have read https://www.reddit.com/r/OculusGo/comments/992r4g/id_like_to_buy_an_oculus_go_primarily_for/ and it doesn't sound that impressive.

I maybe could make a VR hardware and player forum section to begin with.

Wearing the VR for longer periods can be a bit of a strain. I've tried a movie, looks great, but you can't get up and walk around with it on. I prefer my video monitor or my projection screen for regular movies. (Along with the surround sound. )

But I haven't tried any full length 3D movies on it yet, just short 3D videos on the Oculus and similar sites. And the 3D is impressive, especially the ones at higher resolutions.

Presently, it looks like gamers use VR more than just people watching video. But more video content is likely coming.

The Oculus Go has a screen resolution of 2560 × 1440 pixels, so better than a lot of monitors.
The 'screen door effect' isn't that noticeable, especially after a few minutes viewing. And the headset is fairly light.

I think VR headsets will get a lot more popular, especially if the price comes down a little and more content (And games) become available.
And it would be nice if the weight came down a little more so it doesn't feel like wearing a welding helmet.

    Hi Baldrick and Redwudz,
experience very much depends on content you are trying. Software became better and better. For example using roomscaling. My intension when buying it wasn't game or watching video. I like animation and creation in 3d. It is very different way of creation. So get Quill and other software for free. Also very much depend on PC specs and can imagine software/games that are played on edge of specs can be really dissapointing. The oculus rift has 2160x1200 at 90 fps. Refresh (not fps) is much more faster. And 90fps I read is minimum to have impression for VR. Also what is very importing is to have good calibrated sensors. Displays are OLED and earphones are 3d with super sound. Actualy not sure if year ago was available oculus touch. Far better controller than vive. You can use it instead of gamepad (that was shiped earlier) and with touch you have illusion that you really grab a thing. Very nice apps for introduction is First contact. Really great impresion. You took discets from robot and very nice created welcome apps.
I also think it becomes widely spread in feature. Also glow like controllers are in developement, so you will be able to control things at finger resolution. Throwing balls, granades, brushes anything.

Edit - Actually read that second sensor and touch was added in august 2017. Second sensor is needed to roomscaling moving back and forth and on sides, and oculus touch is great step also. Used to be shiped with remote control, which is considered useless. So if you try it prior this experience was much less than with nowadays oculus rift.

Watched this, and not sure if 60fps, or buffering is problem. I hope it is buffering. But it caused really bad effect on head and eyes. It is in 8k 3d. Should watch it second time, to see if buffer causing this. But have no power because head hurts.

So not sure if 60 fps or buffering is causing bad perception. Probably also Gizmo VR problem itself. Don't know.

    Hi,
it is related to topic and future of VR. I found app NextVR. You can watch sports and other events. It is free, with limited content. But there is a future. It is more for oculus GO and more common VR, but bandwidth requiered is 20Mb. There are for example videos from NBA last finals. When camera is next to rim or basket, not good at english. And videos are just front hemisphere. It will be better and better in terms of video quality. Or there are Box footage stupid Wrestling included and Tennis and so on. There should be also concerts, shows ... Of course lenght is just about 5 mins. But experience = sportsman from very close are ordinary humans . Also noticed that as NBA offered season pass where you can for about 150 USD watch all games of all teams = all season matches, so there is season pass VR coming soon. This is future iam very interested in. Price will be bigger of course, at least i expecting it, but iam just interested in only one team matches, so probably price will be cheap enough.

I hope it is at least related to this thread.

Any news about topic, declined? It is really wide field. Plenty of players (free) also 3d movies, barrel fisheye and i dont know what else. Also there is plenty of formats begining with several youtube formats, i know about 20+ now. Also there are animation software, not mentioned modeling in VR, absolutely uncomparable with mouse + flat display work. It is really fast growing thing that has lot of new aspects and potentials.

Bernix: If you like you could be the moderator of the vr forum section and also post detailed guides of all VR players you have tried.

And who will buy me a vr headset?
