I use a stereo vcr for recording. I then dub it to mpeg2 using my hauppauge wintv pvr 250.

I use a cable HDPVR SA8300 to record and store TV progms and transfer to norm def vid's using DVD Recorder and then edit DVD disk on my computer.

Just starting to phase out my VCR. I still use the VCR as a backup, but lately more and more I've been using my timed PC recordings for my primary viewing pleasure. It suits me because the PC is usually recording widescreen HDTV.

This is definately the way to go... especially for sports events. No more dealing with crummy SLP recordings of ballgames, and now HDTV quality too. As a side note, I was disappointed that the 2005 Indy 500 was not HDTV.

DVR with my Cable TV provider.
Had a Direct TV TiVo. Liked the TiVo much more than the SA/Pioneer DVR cable boxes.

I generally don't record TV. I find the reception to be poor quality for the shows I'd like to record. WOW, Time Warner, Cox, and Direct TV all have more or less the same quality Digital TV, which, IMO, is dirt poor.

The movie channels (HBO ....) look pretty good, but the rest of the channels just suck.

Maybe time to upgrade to HDTV.

I have both a DVD recorder and a SKY+ PVR.

The SKY+ box is a bit like a TIVO, but it records the digital data stream from the satelite straight to HD, still encrypted tho. It has completley changed the way we watch TV in our house (we now have 2 of them!).
It is now pretty rare for us to watch a program 'live' it is either recorded or sometimes simply paused while we wait for a convenient time to start viewing. Live rewing is great for whne you missed some dialog because of an interruption, or to review ref's decisions whne watching sport!

Main drawback is that the only way of archiving recording long term is analog out to the DVD recorder (or other capture device), no chance of preserving the original digital recording other than leaving it on the internal HD.

I used to record movies some years ago on a VCR. I stopped doing that. Now I just use the computer to capture Video via Dazzle Hollywood DV Bridge (I know, it is yuck, but until I need something better ...)

I use my ReplayTv. I have 3 capture cards in my closet, can't even remember the names of two of them. Set the record with the replay channel guide, schedule the task to download the mpg to the pc overnight, edit, and burn if need be. Great for Tv or VHS transfers. Nice and easy. At this point in time, I couldn't imagine going back to capturing to my pc.

I use my computer to capture video....I have no need to waste money on TiVos and other types of recorders. Using Scenalyzer I can set timer recordings direct from the sattelite to the laptop via camcorder passthrough and then I transfer the video to my main workstation PC for editing and burning to DVD. Pretty much when you capture from sattelitte to PC you pretty much get the best quality you can get. I only use a VCR anymore as a backup, as I am phasing out VHS myself.

I use my PC to capture DVB streams at the same quality they were transmitted - I wouldn't consider a standalone recorder without this feature.

Can't recommend the Nebula DigiTv crap though - software from hell, I think they employed the Pinnacle DC30 coders.

Will probably get one when they come at a reasonable price with a digital tuner built in, not really interested in bloated analog captures (By bloated I mean crappy analog quality captured at DVD bitrates)

First, I'd like to point out again.. that this *alternate method*
is *not* a replacement to my usual video process methods.

I have two units (an iLO 04 and Pioneer 220-S) However, I pretty much
use my 220-S.

And, I mostly use it for when I don't care much about maximum quality
in my projects, because these are just quicky records of shows to
watch later on.. for instance, the show on WB-11, "..The Geek".. I record
that show every Wednesday.. I pop in an -R disk, and press record, and
I continue on my merry way with my endeavors while it records the show.

Also, when I'm doing this, and have other records to do, I don't bother
with the finalize step. I may wait till the following week to actually
finilize the disk. The buity of this is that the finalize will still
work later on, even after you've recorded to other -R disks

I use my VCR for the tuner, passed through my Sony camcorder into my firewire connection on the computer and use WinDV to "capture". And I wrote a scheduling program for unattended recording, (after the Windows scheduler let me down a couple times).

Dishnetwork deal came with a PVR unit, man I love that thing.
