  1. I've personally had best success using pyIDM with youtube-dlc fork. For the remainder, youtube-dl might be abandoned at the moment where youtube-dlc is the successor. Arguing about the laws and DMCA relating to youtube-dl will be a conversation that never ends, best to move on just as the earth revolves. I believe other programs will use youtube-dlc instead.

  2. On https://youtube-dl.org/ there is version v2020.11.01.1 available.I just typed -U and it updated. Download link redirects now to https://gitlab.com/dstftw/youtube-dl/, which as of right now wasn't announced as an official mirror, dstftw is sergey's username on github, and download link on youtube-dl.org points to it, so looks legit.I didn't know names of the maintainers, so did some digging. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Youtube-dl points to https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8648436 which points to https://rg3.name/201408141628.html where I found Sergey M. aka dstftw. So it does indeed look legit.

tdlr; temporary new version available here: https://gitlab.com/dstftw/youtube-dl/

    Thanks.

That Reddit link, has discussion about it now using a youtube API Key and noone knows why. There was speculation:

Can't say for sure. I'd at least wait to hear for an explanation why that API key is there. It's not the sort of thing that makes any logical sense right now.
That would if nothing else give them a list of IPs to ban at a future date, or a list of potential targets to send further legal nastygrams to.
... of course there's a non zero chance it was hacked. there's a non zero chance an attacker would be able to put out a fake announcement spelling out exactly what you want to hear, too.
I didn't know names of the maintainers, so did some digging. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Youtube-dl points to https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8648436 which points to https://rg3.name/201408141628.html where I found Sergey M. aka dstftw. So it does indeed look legit.
    ... try adding --no-check-certificate
That sounds like a bad idea. What's wrong with the certificate?

    https://github.com/github/dmca/blob/master/2020/10/2020-10-23-RIAA.md

The thing with the RIAA is that they rely n the fact that they have massive amounts of money behind them and it becomes very expensive to fight them, so for a small target on the receiving end of one of these notices it's very easy to just give up without a fight.

People that have fought them have won a number of times, primarily because the RIAA does not actually own the copyrights they claim are being infringed, and it's not clear that they have any authority to represent the artists they claim to. When you sue you need to show "standing to sue", meaning show that you actually have a right to sue. The RIAA, like others, try to use "organizational standing", and courts have at times rejected such claims, even against the RIAA.

Honestly, this is a nothing burger, all you have to do is remove the comments in the source that references specific artists and then host the source in a country more liberal about copyrights, Russia and China come to mind and you'll be fine.

Besides, youtube-dl is open source, and it has been included in thousands of Linux and BSD iso's, plus it has very valid uses, I use it to download tons of Chemistry and Physics lectures off of YouTube, as well as some Bio and Economics lectures.

    This isn't going anywhere.
why did they make the source reference specific artists?

I would imagine it was oversight, not realizing how it could be used as a legal wedge.

Thank you for your comment. I like your moniker and I must remember from the TV show "don't get you angry and you are quite different when you are angry". That being written as a fan of that show, I always found the green hulk cool as can be.

I know it's a bit late, but for future reference that error can be bypassed by adding "--no-check-certificate" at the end.
