Assuming you have a HUGE display or monitor and a DAMN-FAST multicore machine, then HEVC is (or will be) the way to go.

Otherwise, AVC still is "the king".

"Best"? Means many things to different people. If you mean "highest quality for lowest bitrate, regardless of complexity", the CURRENT best codec is h.264/AVC. A few years from now it would likely be h.265/HEVC, but not yet for everyday consumer use.

Btw, do you have a 4k monitor with which to view & evaluate?

mp4, mpeg and avi are video containers.

h264/avc and h265/hevc are video codecs.

Which is best cake in cardboard box or cake in a glass cake dish? Containers have no bearing on the quality. The codecs and settings used determine the quality. Assuming you mean "picture quality" when you say "best".

And you think you'll benefit from 4K source material?

Your question has already been answered. The current best codec is AVC or VP9. mp4 and mpg are containers and have nothing to do with codecs aside from containing them.

Not necessarily. I have a 22" 1080p TV. That will show more detail than your 32" 720p TV. I also have a 27" 2560x1440 computer monitor. That will show even more detail. Whether you can see that extra detail depends on the viewing distance.

It probably defaulted to Mpeg2 because of the resolution. It gave a bunch of buffer underflow errors while encoding.

Below are two UHD MPEG-1 still pictures Sample #2 used an "ALL-8" intra matrix.

They were generated with the olde TMPGenc Plus, of course

I tried mpeg2enc as well, however it has some stupid limitation on the max VBV buffer size (1024kB for MPEG-1)

Besides, VirtualDub cannot open the samples, and says "No video stream!"

That's a common issue when just outputting video only, the track info isn't present so most apps will report no track found, ffmeg command line fixes that issue.

Prores uses motionjpeg 2000, and what does that have to do with mpeg-1.....

@racer-x, prores does NOT use mjpeg nor mjpeg2000 (at least not standard version), it's Apple proprietary.

As I said earlier, depends on one's definition of "best". If best is meant in terms of "quality regardless of bitrate or complexity", then uncompressed, lossless compressed, or raw formats would top the list.

This, however, sounds like a hypothetical posed by someone with little invested in the answer, or even a full understanding of the variables involved, so that's enough effort for me for now.

The prores version I use is from ffmpeg and that one uses mjpeg 2000 according to Virtual dub anyway...

Vegas reports ffmpeg Prores as Apple Codec. Here's what Virtualdub says about ffmpeg Prores. I'm probably wrong here.

Yes, there is a bug, but I can't determine where it is exactly

As far as I knEw, ProRes is not MJP2.
