I can enable AMD FreeSync when using a DisplayPort cable, but not an HDMI cable. Is AMD FreeSync supposed to work with HDMI or is it depended on monitor too?

AMD FreeSync is disabled (grayed) in the monitor's setup when using an HDMI cable (tried several).

Service claims that the monitor supports FreeSync only with DisplayPort 1.2 and not DisplayPort 1.1 or HDMI.
