hd capture

hi there

i've been given a hd camcorder (SONY HDR-hc3) it records to mini dv.

I would like to capture my tapes to best quality hd format. Could anyone give me advice about how to go about this?

i'm used to capturing avi files via firewire using premiere and then using tmpg but im not sure about:

best file format to capture in
processing power needed (im assuming that since they would be bigger files - this would be a factor
best software to capture with

The SONY HDR-hc3 records to HDV or DV format. If you record HDV, you can transfer either HDV or DV over Firewire.

For HDV capture use HDVsplit.
For DV capture use WinDV.

HDV playback requires adequate CPU and/or HD display card decode assist. What are your computer specs (CPU, display card/chipset)?

You are GO on computer hardware. A basic package for Blu-Ray editing/authoring is Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum. Free alternatives exist but are much more difficult to master. HDV is Blu-Ray ready for codec but the container must be changed from MTS to M2TS.
