  1. Hello first time poster so I hope I dont sound foolish. I am converting a large number of personal dvd's to MP4 and store on an external drive. Which I can plug into a small box plugged into a hdmi cord to my tv which allows me to play them without the hunderedes of disks to go through. My issue is that on the TV the MP4 is square and my flat screen is not. Is there a way to rip the dvd to an aspect ratio or something that will be able to fit my tv full screen? I have tried winxdvd ripper and dvdfab both free versions. I am willing to pay if the software will do what I need. any help would be great. Thanks

    Thank you

Are your dvds 4:3? And your tv 16:9? So you get black border at left and right. You must then crop it to 16:9.

Or are you getting black borders at top and bottom?

Can't you use any zoom setting on your tv?

  3. Yes its a left and right black sides issue sorry for leaving that out. If I go into the tv settings and set to stretch it will fill the screen . I was hoping that maybe there was a way to not have to do that step.

I still need to know what the dvd source aspect ratio is? Are those in 16:9 widescreen?

Then open a mp4 with mediainfo, view->text and post the details here.

I guess your mp4 player might be ignoring the 16:9 aspect ratio in the mp4.

That's one crappy converter. 1024x768 and 4:3!?!?!!?! (If your dvds are 16:9 then...)

And your player seems to support vob/mpg. Then try instead use vob2mpg on the dvd. You must rip it first(with dvdfab or anydvd). Then can you just play the mpgs on your player. But you need more space then, 4-8gb/dvd as this doesn't shrink your dvds.

If you want to shrink the video then try a better converter like vidcoder or handbrake. Just load the dvd video_ts folders and use a preset.

  7. 4:3 material isn't supposed to fill a 16:9 screen.

But we don't know the dvd source aspect ratio yet....

I guess you can select the dvd video_ts folder with mediainfo and it will scan the dvds properties.

If they are in 4:3 then just zoom on your tv...

Look at the DVD case. There's usually something about the aspect ratio. When you see the 4:3 pillarboxed image on the screen does everybody look too tall and skinny? Or do they look normal?
