Does that mean the older widevine.dll files won't work even in newer versions of Chrome?

No widevinecdm.dlls lower than 4.10.2209.0 will not be able to get keys. After May 31, 2021.
They will ask you to update widevineCdm.dll to play the video. Also widevine signature will be discarded or will not be valid (Correct me if I am wrong?)

  8. Yes this is a pain, and have to put the old files back in after a reboot, and have done everything i can think of, to make Chrome to stop updating, on my Windows box, have not with my Linux box yet.

I am new so i may be way off base on this one, or have been reading about older WV version, but i thought the WV keys are inside the MPD, stored as a Base64, since it is all sent as a package, for the the player. I am still working though things, but the public key that WV decrypter uses, should be packed somewhere, maybe in the sig.dll file.

If that was the case, we wouldn't need the extension

LOL true. I am still reading about how WV works, since i am having some issues, and i think the site i am playing with, is using a new version of WV, and was just getting ready to post a couple of questions. Since this is sort of on topic, where and/or how are the keys passed? is it in a parameter like site.com?WVK = as234dsdf?WV_KID = uiujhkr1234 and then those params get decoded with WV decrypter? Have not had the time yet to look through the WV decryter source to see how it works.

Also i was thinking that the dll's were more of a custom codec, such as a codec for MP4, or Divix, and not the decrypting code/tool.
