    By now you have probably already fried the DV port of your camcorder or the USB port of your laptop, There is no such firewire to USB adapter or firewire to HDMI adapter, it's a scam.

    The only truly working "Firewire to USB 2.0" devices are those old Pinnacle boxes (such as the Pinnacle 500 USB and the 700 USB). I used the 500 myself for years. It really does work just like a native Firewire port. I actually do regret selling it because motherboards don't have Firewire built-in anymore (doh!). These Pinnacle boxes are hard to come by these days (and sometimes quoted ridiculous prices!), so I settled with a PCI expansion card (which unfortunately is no option for a laptop).

    Try looking around for an old Laptop with a firewire port, I have an old HP laptop that I use for this purpose.

  6. Or pick up the cheapest PC you can find and toss in a PCI or PCIe firewire card.

    Yes, like I wrote about before use a Pinnacle device that emulates firewire on a USB port:

    thanks to all, your info was very helpful.
    especially the threads: pinnacle 500 box, and buying an old firewire pc.

    I found such used pinnacle box for around 60 pounds (on the well known platform in the US).
    it made my day!

    and by the way; just saw there's an other used item still available on the us-platform.
    greetings;
    wim.

    Glad to hear it.
    These boxes are 15+ years old, so any you can find will be used. Back in 2006 or 2007 I bought the Pinnacle 500 USB for less than EUR 50 brand new in the box.
    I would not recommend it for capturing via it's analog inputs (it has slight jailbars, burns brights and has very bad Y/C separation with Composite input), but it's Firewire emulation abilities are perfect. However all of my experience in this regard was under Windows XP and I wouldn't bet it works just as well under Win 10 though.

    Edit: Scratch that, according to dellsam34 in this post it works just fine under Win 10.
