  1. After a couple of years the hard disc on my Philips DVDR 7260H has died. I have a spare hard disc out of a PC and i am capable of putting this into the DVD player.
Question: what software is needed on the new hard disc and where do i get it from?
I tried to plug the HDD into the DVD player and switched it on, but all i get is the 'starting' message which hangs around for ages. Is the machine actually doing something or do i need to put software onto the new HDD first?

    Good question.

I'm facing a similar issue. As far as I can tell, these need to be formatted as FAT32 prior to installation.

I don't believe there is any software available...whatever is needed, is in the chip from the factory.

That's what I'd do if I were you, use another puter to format it as FAT32.....but prior I'd look at the specs, it should tell you , FAT32 or FAT16 etc....even if it says factory setting is FAT16 and you can only format to FAT32, do that and install it...you can always repartition the drive and reformat to whatever later on

Please post back and let people know what happened

Does the faulty disc spin up?

Can you get it to show up in your PC's BIOS?

Can you upload a photo of the details on the label?

Can you capture the contents of the first sector on the drive? You can use Microsoft's Sector Inspector to do this:
    http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/SecInspect.zip

Extract the above archive to the one folder and execute the SIrun.bat file. The procedure will generate a report file named SIout.txt which you can then upload to a file sharing service so that we can examine it.

Can you run a SMART diagnostic on the drive? This will identify its features, and faults.

HD Sentinel (DOS / Windows / Linux):
    http://www.hdsentinel.com/

    HDDScan for Windows:
    http://hddscan.com/

Look for reallocated, pending, or uncorrectable sectors.
