In my experience you pretty much need a TBC or some sort of video stabilizer (with a TBC like function) in order to get these Hauppauge devices to capture from VHS. They (the Hauppauge devices) just do NOT like an unstable signal.Originally Posted by WinSpecToR

Perhaps the type of VHS VCR has something to do with it. Having said that I've used quality pre-recorded tapes on a JVC S-VHS and a Toshiba 6-Head with V3 tech (probably one of the greatest designs ever) and the Hauppauge couldn't record without a TBC. Copy protection was NOT an issue.

I just set 3 channels to PAL M, N,BHTSIK.. (soemthing like that), when I set my VCR to NTSC/AUTO without a tape playing, the image is fine, as soon as I jump the VCR to PAL the images goes all scrambled, this is with nothing playing.

Also if you bought an NTSC unit then you can only capture PAL via the Line-In inputs ... not the tuner input. The tuner input will only work with NTSC if it is an NTSC model. However the composite/s-video input and red/white stereo audio jacks are the way to go if you need PAL and NTSC capture. Should never be using the tuner input anyway unless it is connected to a "raw" cable line (where you NEED the tuner to fuction as a tuner).

I am trying to capture using the RCA jacks and not the tuner part of this pvr. -
As I mentioned earlier in this thread ... might have better luck with an answer over at the SHS forums.
You said you got the MCE version right? I think that version can only do NTSC but I'm not sure. You should have gotten the non-MCE version.

I'll try my luck over there, but my particular forum hasn't had any post in over a year, I hope someone will check it.
Mine says Media Center kit on the box so I guess so I have the MCE. I can always return it, but I'd prefer to avoid the hassle if I can get this one working some how. -
I emailed their tech support, waiting for an answer.

WinSpecToR I can't find any spec on that Philips VCR456 it may not be a TRUE multi-system VHS Deck have you try using the Composite
-
SHS: I have been trying to use composite this whole time.
I found something interesting. I set 3 channels to Pal B,M and N in wintv2000 which didn't work as the video signal was all scrambled, but the audio was ok.
I figured I'd try a few other apps like iuvcr and virtual vcr and I was able to see the pal source fine, as they were able to let me choose the video source from pal, ntsc. Hmmm ? -

WinSpecToR have you test a Home DVD Player, analog TV or Cable or anything else beside the VCR how dose it look?.
From look of that image it look like more then one issues -
Well I really don't know whats wrong with Wintv, sometimes the NTSC channel looks like the above picture and the PAL vhs will work, sometimes vice versa, I guess I'll give an other program a shot, but the thing is that some programs only detect that I haev the WIN TV PVR but doesn't let me choose between the different connections.
