Why wont subtitles work?

I want subtitles to work with MPC seeing as it's my preferred video player. I've also tried other video players such as VLC , windows media player and still no luck with the subtitles. I've now un-installed those programs and decided to ask for help.

As you can see I don't have the options to modify my subtitles in play or navigate and I've got the Output set to VMR9(renderless)** and I also tried putting it to VMR7(renderless)** and still no luck. Any help is much appreciated I really want to watch The Last Samurai with subtitles so I understand the parts in Japanese.
