The Apple iPad web page implies the iPad "plays" HD Video on its 9.7 inch screen. My calculations show "HD" is a stretch of the truth.
    http://www.apple.com/ipad/features/video.html

iPad screen resolution is 1024x768 in 4:3 format. A 16:9 movie would show 1024x576p which is SD display resolution same as a PAL DVD.

If you view the movie 4:3 with sides cropped, the resolution would be 1024x768p.

A 2.35:1 standard aspect ratio movie would show as 1024x436p.

Output video feed is limited to 480p (per CNet).

Still, DVD resolution on a 9.7 inch screen is fairly adequate if you view from about 1.5 feet (3.7 feet max).

I like that it doesn't have a HDMI, SD or USB port..those things get in the way.

    Ha... Ha ...

Note: It also runs one program at a time, kind of like MSDOS.

Good for him. I'm glad he's optimistic about an oversized iPod Touch

Now if was more like a full Apple laptop with a touch screen... That, I think would be worth investigating, and I'm a die-hard PC user.

Wow a company playing fast and loose with tech terminology? Why I am not surprised?

But thanks for the note for those who were looking for that feature specifically.

Can't multitask, no built in camera, the headphone cord has to be draped behind or over the screen cause it's on top, the battery isn't removable, my advice, wait a long time, maybe for the 2nd, 3rd or 4th generation, or a competitor who comes out with more for less, the ipad starts at a price point higher than many laptops which can obviously do more. Revolutionary, hardly.

Who cares about a tablet, holding it on your lap is awkward at best, and your trying to deal with it on a train or bus? forget it, this ipad thing is a joke. I can get a laptop on tigerdirect with multitasking for less money.

Steve Job is working on a Hard hat that you can hang an ipad, and two cans of beer.

You guys have obviously not used the iPad. I also wasn't sure if it was just a big iPod (which isn't a bad thing), or what use it would really have. We got one for testing purposes, and the thing is awesome! It is much more than an iPod Touch. Watching movies and TV shows on it is fantastic, web browsing is really nice, much more enjoyable than a laptop. Using it for portable presentations is fantastic, especially if you use video in your presentations. The 3G is a nice, helpful touch as well. As for the headphones, I have never found that to be an issue, and even if it was, there really is no top or bottom, as the screen flips 360 degrees. As for HDMI, I am really not sure why I would even want that on there. I have never had the desire to hook the thing to my TV.

That might be all good for you but I was disputing the "HD" claims. The iPad works in PAL DVD display resolution range and does not output HD for projectors. The best it can do for video output is 480p/576p or using the optional VGA cable it can replicate the 1024x768 4:3 display.

Sorry edDV! With all the other posts, I lost the focus on the original statement! You are correct though, a 1024x768 screen obviously can't display a 1080P video at full resolution. But then again, neither can most big flatscreen TVs! They will play the videos, but not at full potential. I believe the iPad will play the videos, but not at full res. Then again, at less than 10" a 1080P, 720P and 540P video will likely look the same anyway

True but they opt'd to stay SD with their outputs. With a better graphics chipset they could have output 720p or 1080i/p for external display (DVI-D, HDMI or display port). I predict this will be in the next model. Just think of the uses:

    * Presentation: Speaker sees 1024x768 while big screen shows 720p/1080i/p

    * Couch potato: View Guide at 1024x768 while feeding higher resolution to the HDTV. Most laptops do this.

    * Graphics or text: View and work on a small area on the iPad while viewing the full frame on an HD monitor.

  14. I'm not surprised, seems everything Apple does is glitter on the surface, but once you look below it's not all that great. That's the Steve Jobs way, he's not a techie he's a marketing guy; his bio helped explain a lot. I never was a fanboy, but I used to think they were well tought out and built machines, until I started fixing them. Some of the design flaws are just baffling, no wonder they have such a hard time with hard drives. And the soldering, what a crappy job. And they sure like to use tape. I had one just go dead a couple minutes after booting in the morning; I'm sure it's a power supply issue, but the DC-DC converters are all on the logic board. Gotta replace the motherboard to fix a power supply problem!

All I can say is buy Apple care for as long as you can.
