So are you into the Guiness book of world records? Do you follow it at all? Do you read it?

I see these posted on news websites occasionally but rarely if ever read the whole article.

    How about you?

I wonder if that will top over 50% when the poll has run its course......

  7. I didn't read down that far, but I probably would have still picked no, don't care.

I voted "Other". If there is something in the news about a record being broken I generally read, watch or listen.

I'm not really much of a beer drinker either Yoda, but my brother-in-law is. Too bad he took the rest of the Samuel Adams variety pack back home with him. Othewise we could have a tasting featuring ale, lager and stout.

It was incredibly fascinating to me when I was about 12-13...
I outgrew it quickly though. It's really all pointless crap and a lot of it is more luck or (bad) genetics than anything else.

Same here. Now I just "follow" world records in track and field athletics.

Yep. Fascinating at 10, stupid by 12. It is full of freaks, unfortunates, people with way too much time on their hands, and very little of it actually adds to the sum of human value.

Is it meaningless drivel in the great scheme of things? Most of it, yes.

Is it cool to tuck away a few factoids for future reference? Most of the time, yes.

I can take it or leave it, honestly.

My kids have the books and I do catch myself thumbing through them every now and again. It's fun. I equate it to most of today's comedic movies - i.e. mostly meaningless shit, but sometimes fun.

It's all in the eye of the beholder.

  22. I chose no, because I have no interest in how many spiders someone can eat, or how many times someone can pull a bus with their hair. It is mostly meaningless drivel. It ranks right up there with Ripley's Believe It or Not.

Like others, I think this pretty much hit the nail on the head. I wore out a paperback copy when I was a kid - consequently most of my knowledge of Guiness records would be about 40 years out of date (if I could remember it).

  25. IIRC, the book was started because the author saw someone killed in a bar fight after an argument over one of these "records".

Mostly oddball trivia, some interesting, much of it kinda disgusting. Good material for the Reading Room.

Isn't it spelled Guinness (for both)?

At any rate, if there is a Guinness world record for "Fastest person to become an alcoholic", and the Guinness brewery wants to sponsor me, I'm up bright and early for this challenge.

Of course, it would be for the pure sake of a wonderful business arrangement. :P

Wow the "no I don't care" is leading over the "I want beer" choice. What happened? It's only at 26%????

Should I start a new poll on who drinks beer here????

EDIT - I decided to start one. Go ahead and sound off!

  29. The old book was better, the newer ones have some censorship. They used to keep a listing of the youngest person to give birth. But they don't want to encourage that so they drop topics like that or other risky things.
