Xbox 360 capture: Can I play in 1080p record in 720p under $200?

Hey all!

I've got around a $200 budget. I can extend that to $300 in 2 weeks if I need to. My goal is to be able to record xbox 360 games. My problem lies in the setup of my room. A panorama from my phone is at the bottom. My current setup is my PC in the "nook" of an oddly shaped room (that can't be changed.) There is a 30 foot hdmi cord running from my PC currently to my receiver (under the TV's) so that I can display my PC on the TV and play games over there with a wireless keyboard/mouse.

The problem is I have a 55inch plasma and the seats are 8'6" away from the TV. So playing in 720p would likely be an issue I'm assuming from a quality perspective. So my question is, is it possible for me to somehow record gameplay for under $200-300 while playing in 1080p?

Whatever recommendations you have I'm open to but the budget is tight at no more than $300 currently. That you all for your help. I've been searching the forum for a couple of hours and still unsure of how to make this work.

As far as I know, there is no capture device that will allow you to play at 1080p60 resolution and record at 720p60. All the ones I have seen are only capable of recording the resolution they receive.

If you can't tolerate playing games at 720p60 on your TV, there are a few HD capture devices within your budget that can accept 1080p60 video, although they only capture at 1080p30. Some of them use software encoding, so you would need a fairly powerful CPU to be able to use one of those for 1080p video.

P.S. It would be a good idea to update your computer details if you want advice on capture devices.

I'm thinking of getting this with powered HDMI splitter to run from tv to another 35 foot cable to come back to the pc. Will tihs work? I'll just record in 1080p. I didn't know I could record 1080p under $500 till i saw this card.

Yes, the Avermedia Live Gamer HD was one of the under $200 devices I have seen that accepts 1080p60 video, although it captures 1080p60 as 1080p30. It uses H.264hardware encoding, so it does not require an especially powerful CPU.

The Blitzcast gamepro 1080 is an external device with similar features, although it has not yet been released, so it is still a largely unknown quantity . http://blitzcast.com/gamepro1080/
