    Hey, my laptop has a 1TB HDD and also an empty slot for a M.2 SSD. My laptop takes a long time to boot up, and many more minutes until it is finally able to run. It has become quite slow since I bought it back in August 2016. I have now decided to buy a SSD to replace the HDD, which I want to remove from my laptop.

    I have read that M.2 SSD's come in different sizes that look almost identical so I was slightly worried that I might purchase the wrong size and not be able to either get an exchange or a refund from the vendor.

    Here is some details about my Laptop;

    Lenovo ideapad Y700 15ISK
    Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700HQ CPU @ 2.60GHz 2.60 GHz
    Installed RAM 16.0 GB (15.8 GB usable)
    System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
    Pen and touch No pen or touch input is available for this display

    Here is the SSD that I want to purchase;

    https://www.currys.co.uk/products/samsung-980-pro-m.2-internal-ssd-with-heatsink-2-tb-10233791.html

    I just wanted to know if this would be compatible with my laptop? TIA

  3. Your laptop's HD interface: 2.5-inch, 7 mm SATA III
    Your desired SSD interface: PCIe 4.0 NVMe, therfore incompatible.
    Search for a SATA III SSD.

  4. An M2 SSD with heat sink is not likely to fit. They are meant for desktops.

    What about without a heatsink?

    TYSM for this! I will have a look over the weekend. I have a voucher for $300 that I want to use for the best SSD that I can get for my laptop.

    Found this link that might help

    https://uk.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/lenovo/ideapad-y700-15isk#ssd

    Personally, I wouldn't bother with Currys. Unless you're very lucky to find a staff member than knows what they sell instead of just reading the cards on the products

    Also, you 'might' have to update your BIOS for it to recognize newer NVME cards

    Try Scan Computers. They have the WD 850X (without heatsink as there are two versions with and without) that's faster than what Currys are selling and more than half their price. They are charging that much as it comes with a heatsink. Its been proved that ordered the exact same NVME but with no heatsink and then ordering a 3rd party good quality heatsink will save you a big chunk of cash

    https://www.scan.co.uk/products/1tb-wd-black-sn850x-m2-2280-pcie-40-x4-nvme-ssd-7300mb...6300mb-s-write

    Just checking a tutorial on changing the NVME, if it has a heatsink it won't fit. If needs no heatsink

    Also, as your laptop is now 6 years old, if it hasn't had a clearout or you've never reinstalled Windows then installing windows on the NVME will make a huge difference. A quick clear out using CCleaner (its 100% free and not trialware) might make a difference but may need to be run a few times to clear everything. I've used it for years with no issues and use it as first call if people ask me to try to speed up slow laptops or how to get rid of junk from computers
