    Hello,

A friend of mine would like to produce a documentary to be shown on the Internet or through a video projector during events.

He's no geek, but is motivated enough by this project to learn just enough about hardware + software.

    So, he would need…
    • a video recorder very simple to use, good enough to record videos inside and outside, sometimes holding the device with one hand while riding a bicycle, and that can take an external mike when interviewing people and avoid wind/noise
    • a simple Windows application for editing
    • at an affordable price, since it won't be used often and not for professional use

What kind of hardware and software would you recommend ?

    Camcorder? DSLR? Accessorized smartphone?

As a reference, for the microphone, I bought a Boya BY-M1 which sounds pretty good when recording podcasts.

    Thank you.

  2. There are people that shoot a complete documentary with smartphones.

Google for "documentary shot smartphone" and you'll see blogs and tutorials about the gear you need, for editing Blackmagic Davinci Resolve, it's free.

    Thank you.

I was thinking of a camcorder because I figure it'd be easier to hold with one hand, but there might be add-ons that do this too.

You might look into a handheld smartphone gimbal. The electronic versions aren't cheap, but the stabilized image is worth it.
A similar, cheaper mechanical device may work also for a camera or phone.
