    Dear All,

I am happy to annonce that we have
just finished a huge 5.1 surround sound
    compression research project.

    Software tools for encoding movies
    with full 5.1 surround,
    and
for real time decoding are available now.
The decoder is compatible with BSplayer
    (or other DirectShow players!

    You can use VirtualDubMod_Aud-X_enabled
    (available @ www.aud-x.com for free)
    to create new movies.

Don't know if it's history, but when it was first posted here it got a lot of postings and a lot of interest. I haven't seen anything about it now in 6 months, no-one anywhere else seems to use it, and the last comment was posted in August in the Tools section.

Anyways, back to the original post.

How do you maintain compatability with AC3 digital decoders in home theatre amps ?

128kbps 5.1 is comparable to what AC3 bitrate for quality ?

A common question here is "How do I convert stereo to 5.1 ?". Can your decoders ability to playback mp3 2.0 channels in 5.1 be used to record and encode a 5.1 sound field from a stereo source, or is it live playback only ?

    > Yes. (comparable to high bitrate AC3s > 384 kbps)

Thanks for that. So if I understand correctly, the Aud-X compabaility with AC3 is only valid when playback occurs from a PC or suitably equiped HTPC.

The reason for the last question, regarding expanding 2.0 - 5.1 via the pseudo-surround module is for the creation of 5.1 AC3 from 2.0 source material for use in DVD production. While it would be no substitute for a true 5.1 source, or perhaps even for Dolby ProLogic II, it would be interesting.

What would happen if a DivX or XviD created with this was played back on a DVD player that supports DivX and XviD (like the Philips 642 or the Pioneer 588).

Do you get 5.1 AC-3 from the DVD player or just plain stereo or nothing?

There are three ways to play Aud-X surround sound (or at least stereo or mono sound) on your external home theatre system:

    1) Play the AVI with Aud-X stream with the use of your DVD player, and you will get stereo (or mono - depending on the encoding Aud-X quality option)

    2) Play the sound from your PC with connecting your sound card (via SPDiF) to the external receiver (the external home theatre amplifier) and chosing such an option in our DirectShow decoder. The amplifier
will recognize the stream as Dolby Digital Surround 5.1

    3) Demux the Aud-X stream. Convert it to AC3 (with our frontend).
Put it back to AVI container. Play it on your DVD DivX hardware player

This was going to be my next question

So I can take the 5.1 Aud-X stream and convert it to 5.1 AC-3 format? Is so then yes that is way kewl.

    EXACTLY!

When you download our codec and install it on your system
    you can run Aud-X from:

    start->programs->Aud-X

    Than select the DECODE tab,
chose AC3 quality (384 kbps for example), open Aud-X sound file
    (with mp3 extension)
and wait for the resulting AC3 file.

    ---
If you do not know how to demux Aud-X stram from the AVI
please let me know, and I'd be happy to explain

  15. So...do i get this correctly? basically with this codec, your mp3's can actually be played back in 5.1? If that's true, its one heck of an amazing feat you have accomplished......and also, there's now a proper way to actually compress ac3 audio and retain the 5.1 audio channels.......also cool....keep up the good work. Another idea you may want to think about is implementing this into say wav, flac, ect...........instead of just mp3, i know some games use wav audio in them, and that would be one heck of a sudeen improvement to the gameplay...i dunno if this is doable, of course, but it may be something that you want to look into?

Also, a side note, i read the dvd ripping guide you got on the website, you may suggest this instead of dvd decryptor, since its a dead program and not updated anymore, to go with dvdfab decryptor, dgindex, and the VFAPI codec to load into the modified build of virtualdubmod.......i say this, because the guide itself wont work for (at least) any of the sony made dvd's within the last year...and a few other companies have been tightning the bolts on dvd copy protection.....i know it will make the guide a little more drawn out, but it will also cause fewer people problems in the end....

Yes, that is true Moreover, the mp3 stereo (beside being resampled to 48 kHz and converted to 5.1) can be transcoded in real time to AC3 stream, compatible with your home theatre system!
You can achieve this in a very simple way. By choosing the correct output
in our decoder (see picture below), and connecting your PC to the amplifier. More information on this available on our web site: www.aud-x.com

Also with a DirectShow compatible player (such as WindowsMediaPlayer), your stereo music can be transcoded to 48 kHz -> 5.1 -> AC3 and can be further sent through spdif to the external amplifier for reproducing full surround!
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think that compressing new movies with our edition of VirtualDubMod_Aud-X_enabled
    http://www.aud-x.com/images/stories/downloads/virtualdubmod_aud-x_enabled.zip
and preserving the full 5.1 sound is very easy.
    What is most important:
    - If you currently have a stereo speaker set, the stream can be converted in real time to stereo (see the decoder picture)
    - You can reproduce a sound on your hardware DVD/DivX player
(it will not be surround, but you will hear a high quality sound, stereo or mono -> depending on the Aud-X encoding option).
    - One day, if you decide to upgrade from stereo to 5.1, you will just switch the decoding option and you'll get a high quality 5.1 surround
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You are reading our minds Yes, we want to focus on games sound in the future.
    Thanks for your post.

Are there any audio-sync issues with this conversion?
    Quote Quote
  20. I havent used it yet for a movie, but i would have to guess that as long as you properly encode the video (i.e. IVTC if needed, ect) you should get exactly zero synch issues to speak of with this, since its CBR....my question, though, is this....is there any plans to allow the people who are currently working on xbox media center to get ahold of this and add support to that? This would be one great addition for xbox media center, i think (i know that it already obviously will play back in stereo, im speaking the 5.1 part....)

There are no sync issues at all. We kept this in mind while designing the codec, and therefore the smapling frequency that we use is 48 kHz,
which is much better suited for synchronization with video.
Also, it is CBR (all frames have the same duration), and therefore can
    be used with AVI.
    ---
You may have problems with using Winamp when reproducing video
with Aud-X, because it seems that there is (or was?) some bug related
to synchronizing audio 48 kHz and video...
Therefore it is advised to use a typical DirectShow compatible players
    (not hybrides like winamp).
For example BSplayer is a good and free program that I could recommend.
    ---
Now, we are working on mixing Aud-X with DolbyPrologicII.
This means that our stereo compatible HGHQ will be recognized by
DPLII decoders as a prologic and converted to multichannel.
Since Aud-X is much superior to the originally analog DPLII, the same stream if reproduced on PC with the use of our decoder, will be decoded
to high quality (similar to AC3) 5.1 stream.
    -------
Please note, that you can use our edition of VirtualDubMod to encode movies, available from www.aud-x.com (and free, ofcourse)
    -------
If the Xbox has a DPLII decoder, than Aud-X HGHQ will be decoded as multichannel.
    ---
We would be ofcourse happy to collaborate with Xbox to popularize Aud-X.
But I am not sure if they are interested in new emerging technologies...

Yes. Use our executable frontend to generate Aud-X from PCM
    (encoding tab)

    ---
Than use our frontend to decode the Aud-X tream to AC3 with specified bitrate.
    (decoding tab)

    --
The front end is available from start->programs->Aud-X->Aud-X.exe

This is very simple, however if you need my assistance,
    I'd be happy to help

Does you tool encode a AC3 5.1 file Directly to Aud-X? If not, can you enable your tool to do that? The front end encoder also refused to encode a 5.1 (6 channel 48KHz, tried both 16-bit AND 32-bit) uncompressed wav file.

    Thanks for tests.

There are two ways to convert the AC3 to Aud-X

    1) If you are compressing a movie, please use our edition of VirtualDubMod
(available from download section @ www.aud-x.com)
to transcode the video stream and the AC3 stream to Aud-X.

    2) Use BeLight to convert the AC3 to 6 channel wave
The resulted wave is compatible with our frontend input.
    http://corecodec.org/frs/do_download.php/195/BeLight-0.21.exe?ticket=3a189237ea433d5c2...ire=1138778421

    -------
In case of second (indirect) conversion, I strongly recommend using BeLight,
because it produces a correct channel order in the PCM (compatible with Aud-X).
There is no standard for the channel order, so using other software may result in incorrect Aud-X encoding.

  27. so, i just looked into it, the ps2 video game system is DLP II compatable, but it seems the xbox is a step above that and uses dolby digital 5.1....i'd assume in this case, the playback SHOULD work properly (note, it doesnt say anything about being DLP II backwords compatable like the ps2 does...and if you are wondering where im pulling the info from, its from right here.....):

    http://www.dolby.com/consumer/games/games_and_consoles4.html

I'm just kinda curious, cuz i know that on a modded xbox system, the media player is supposed to be quite good...if it already doesnt play back properly in that type of setup, just kinda a suggestion to maybe implement it? Once again, i dont really have the setup to test that, but it was kinda a side thought......

The signal is compressed in the following way:
    1) The input 5.1 stream is analyzed and spatial information is generated.
    2) The signal is merged to stereo (Dolby Pro Logic II compatible), or mono
    3) The merged stereo/mono stream is compressed to mp3 and the spatial information
is inserted as an ancillary data to the mp3 stream.
    -------------------
During decoding, if you are using our DirectShow decoder,
the ancillary data is used to reconstruct the 5.1 panorama
    (of similar to AC3 quality).

If you are using a standard mp3 decoder (an external hardware for example), you will be able to decode the main stream mp3.

In other words, Aud-X is mp3 backwards compatible. There are several
encoding options available, which differ in terms of bitrate and backwards compatiblity. Here is the description:

    1) STRQ - streaming quality -> 80 kbps (mp3 mono backwards compatible)
    2) STDQ - standard quality -> 128 kbps (mp3 mono backwards compatible)
    3) HGHQ - high quality -> 192 kbps (mp3 stereo, Dolby Pro Logic II backwards compatible)
    4) SPBQ - superb quality -> 192 kbps (mp3 mono backwards compatible)

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
