hello everyone, im kind of getting into burning dvd iso's in console mode on linux. I got one problem, right now im burning my iso's with growisofs using the following command.

    growisofs -dvd-compat -speed=8 -Z /dev/dvdrw=filename.iso

I have specified 8 as the write speed but when it starts burning it burns at 2x. I want to know how to burn at 8x with this command or any other console burning application. the dvds are dvd-r 8x taiyo yudens code tyg02.

my burner is a BenQ 1640
and im currently using Gentoo Linux 2005.1 with kernel 2.6.15-r1

also, another question for the linux experts.

A long time ago i ran into instructions on how to make a custom command on linux which would for example would let me be able to type

    burndvd filename.iso instead of growisofs -dvd-compat -speed=8 -Z /dev/dvdrw=filename.iso

its probaly something having to do with shell scripts or bash scripts or something like that, thanks for the help guys

implies that there may be a firmware revision available for your drive. (SEE: http://benq.us/support/downloads/downloads.cfm?product=782&page=downloads&dtype=D )

In glancing quickly through the review, I saw nothing to indicate that the drive is not intrinsically capable of the speeds you're expecting from it, which would prompt me to look into system configuration issues with your Linux installation (dma usage, etc.)***; however, I do note that the 1640 is not to be found anymore, with the 1650 replacing it entirely. This kind of pattern does suggest that there may have been issues with the earlier model number (SEE: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/246475 and http://www.cdrinfo.com/forum/tm.asp?m=121287&mpage=2&#124676 and https://www.videohelp.com/forum/archive/t294174.html ).

***For this portion of your inquiry, the Gentoo forums would be a good place to start.

Another consideration would be the quality of the media you're using. Despite advertised writing speeds, media quality is wildly-variable. It is not uncommon to purchase a certified "high-speed" batch of DVDs that simply will not burn any faster than 4x or 2x speed. Write speed variability within a single spindle of 100 DVD blanks, in my tried and true (for me, at least) experience, is nothing better than appalling.

You stated the media to be: dvd-r 8x taiyo yudens code tyg02. I can't tell if these are SL or DL blanks. The drive is stated to have DVD-R DL support at 4x (8x for +R), and a MAX SL DVD writing speed of 16x for +/-R. So, I'm left to guess that you are trying to use the drive to burn SL blanks?

For this, you can either set yourself up with a script, and use it as is, or simply alias the script, if your needs are of a generally repetitive. I'd go into it further, but I'm headed out the door right now. Your quickest solution would be to google/linux/ for aliasing of scripts and commands. You'll get loads of hits that will be useful to you.
