Yes, it is good that security question was brought up here. The less private data on those media players the better, one has to have perhaps google account, signing up with account that is not used heavily for other purposes, cloud with pictures etc. Well, Netflix and streaming services , what you are we going to do, just monitor those credit cards, that is a must anyway, not using debit cards, or from time to time checking streaming history for that account.
Try StreamFab Downloader and download from Netflix, Amazon, Youtube! Or Try DVDFab and copy Blu-rays! or rip iTunes movies!

I'd hate to think we need to become very proficient with Wireshark or something, to thoroughly monitor what these devices are actually doing !
Those folks who were willing to take their chances with Fire TV, but still wanted to use Kodi, needed to block Amazon updates, because they could wipe out whatever they had on there in terms of Kodi and sub-apps -- that is, if some things I was reading online were accurate. When in Las Vegas, don't miss the Pinball Hall of Fame Museum http://www.pinballmuseum.org/ -- with over 150 tables from 6+ decades of this quintessentially American art form. -
What is the reason to get Fire TV, to get 4k content? If 4k is wanted there are some other devices:

So that previous comment of mine about that 4k UHD exclusivity was wrong, that was only for PC's. Microsoft Edge and Win 10 is needed for PC, so that's something that is observed by those who have a HTPC. -
I tested this s912 box with my 400Mbps 10bit 4K HEVC file with the built in movie player and it played smoothly. The remote control was weak though. Better with a bluetooth mouse or using your phone:

I recommend the s912 boxes over s905 for next generation stuff. Here is specs and it still is not a blazing fast box in terms of cut and paste speed, etc:

it also plays my non copyrighted dvd discs through the built in movie player and an attached optical disc driveLast edited by ezcapper; 1st Jan 2017 at 11:52. Reason: plays dvd discs

Just received the first of the two different boxes I had ordered -- both S905 based, I believe. Have only had time to do basic setup & the auto-updating, plus an hour or two of browsing. I will have to look over their forum (they have one), in search of several answers. For a lot of the apps I am getting non-action and "Check the Log for details" type errors, so I will have to learn how to do that, and hope that this log -- wherever it is -- holds some useful info that is semi-intelligible to those who are not already Kodi geeks. YT videos suggest there are several possible causes for these errors, ranging from development-abandoned apps (but not major ones like Navi-X ??) to maintenance issues. Some other apps error out over "missing components." Some find streams that should be working, but they bomb out for unclear reasons. But several apps do work as claimed, so I don't think the problems are systemic; this is looking very hit or miss. I can see there is going to be a pretty fair learning curve involved here.
I've ordered the most recommended air-mouse remote and wireless HTPC keyboard. I'd like to see what can be done with the optional SD card, to expand storage. It looks like most of these boxes top out at supporting a 32 GB. sized one. And I'll be curious to check out attached HDD playback on HEVC and H265 material, neither of which the WD TV Live can handle.Last edited by Seeker47; 1st Jan 2017 at 22:59.
