Today I installed Audacity 2.3.1 to a recent Windows 7 installation I did on another SSD.

    Also installed FFMPEG and Lame.

But when I try to open the audio tracks on an MKV file I get this error.

What I'm missing or doing wrong?

That's the one I downloaded, of course.

    And it's not working.

Should I install another Audacity version?

Open the video file in mediainfo and set it to view > text. Put the info here in this thread
Have you tried dragging any other video files into Audacity - do they work?

They always worked in other Audacity installations I have done, no problem at all.

This time I had to install Vistual C+++ again and another program separately, because Audacity refused to run at all. That had never happened before.

Then I installed FFMPEG, the one specified for Audacity, but I get that message.

I just checked on my other SSD, and it was 2.3.1 too, so now I don't know what might be happening.

I have just tried another video file, and it also denied opening.

    OK, problem solved.

My fault. I had forgotten one step, which is going to Edit > preferences > libraries, and then selecting where FFMPEG and LAME directories were located.

Now the mkv file opens fine in Audacity.
