I've successfully downloaded & burned several distros without paying much attention to MD5 verification. Now I thought I should get with it...

Just downloaded the new Sun 3D desktop:
Finally LG3D LiveCD 3.0 has been released. Based on SLAX 5.1.8, this LG3D LiveCD 3.0 showcases Sun Microsystem's stunning 3D desktop Project Looking Glass 3D (LG3D). 264 Mb https://lg3d-livecd.dev.java.net

Went looking for a MD5 reader and found 119 of'em at SourceForge:
    http://sourceforge.net/search/?type_of_search=soft&words=md5

most of these seem kinda specialized, is there one allpurpose basic utility?

What I do is installed by default is in a shell type in md5sum (File Name)
Then compare the result to the posted restults.

That all their is to it.

    Or, just use

    md5sum -c XYZ.md5

This reads the md5 file and validates each file within.

just fyi guys- the dl I got failed twice when trying to burn the iso; even worse the link to documentation started a program download into the browser window! On Firefox that locked up everything.
Strange, in the Project Looking Glass was very important to Sun & this seems a halfbaked launch at best.

I guess its really demoralizing fighting a monopoly.
