  1. anyone know how big a file size can be put on a dvd+r dual layer disk or dvd-9??

i know when i go to burn a 4.7gb dvd the most i can put on there is only 4398 of space on it. thats not anywhere near the qouted 4gig's and 700megabyte??

what can i expect with dual-layer dvd's then??

i ask these questions because the dvd's themselves are expensive as heck i paid 20 bucks for 3 of those suckers!!

This from 'What is DVD" to the left. <<<

"DVD-9, holds around 8 540 000 000 bytes and that is 7.95 computer GB. DVD+R supports this format. Also called Single Sided Dual Layered. This media is called DVD+R9, DVD+R DL or 8.5 GB Media."

The 8.5GB size is just advertising hype.

That's because the media manufacturers count differently than Windows. To Windows a K byte is 1024 bytes, a M byte is 1024x1024 bytes, and a G Byte is 1024x1024x1024 bytes. But media manufactures count a K Byte as 1000 bytes, an M Byte as 1000*1000 bytes, and a G Byte as 1000*1000*1000 bytes.

If you take 4,700,000,000 bytes and divide by (1024*1024*1024) the result is ~4.38 GB. So the numbers match.
