  1. I've been capping and encoding under linux for a few months now. I've written a few basic scripts that I use a lot. Hope these help someone out!

Each script takes two arguments, the file to be processed and the output filename. You will need transcode and mjpegtools.

divx2mpg -- convert divx file to vcd
    http://members.cox.net/d.maddock1/video/divx2mpg

createstill -- convert a png image to a vcd still
    http://members.cox.net/d.maddock1/video/createstill

vcdencode -- encode a vcd from an mjpeg source avi
    http://members.cox.net/d.maddock1/video/vcdencode

If anyone improves on these (or has a better one), let me know.

    Enjoy.
    Dave.

    Thanks a lot d.maddock1.
Can you recommend a video editor for linux? Similar to Avisynth?

  5. I haven't seen any front-end graphical programs a la avisynth, virtualdub, or tmpgenc for linux, but transcode can do a lot of the same things. Several avisynth and virtualdub filters have been ported to transcode, it includes bbmpeg code, and uses avifile so it can use win32 codecs like Huffyuv. The downside is it is command-line and there are a million different options.

This is okay for encoding and really simple editing like cutting an avi (avisplit/avimerge). It has sharpen, deinterlace, etc. filters. That's about as close as it gets. There are a few other basic editing tools I've heard of:

glav -- (part of mjpegtools) basic cut, merge features.

    kino -- DV editing.

    transcode:

    One more is avidemux

though I have to admit I've not done much more with it than install and open up a few video files. It seems to be progressing quite quickly though.

VirtualDub also works fine for editing using wine, though I know using wine dosn't compleatly count.

I've been meaning to write a non dvd centric frontend for transcode or mencoder for awhile now, but I never seem to be able to find the time.

    Hello.

You may want to also take a look at Linux Video Studio, which uses the mjpegtools (as does the aforementioned glav). Seeing how you'd have to install the mjpegtools to make use of d.maddock1's scripts anyway, I don;t think that would be much of a problem.

The mjpegtools, and I believe Linux Video Studio, can be found at <http://www.sourceforge.net>

Thanks a lot guys. As a real linux newbie I still have to read many tutorials. Thanks for the recommendations, I am going to start after the World Cup.

Just to correct myself, the mjpeg-tools can be found at the above URL, but Linux Video Studio can be found at:

Sory if this may have confused anyone.

There is a new GUI video editor called Cinelerra: http://heroinewarrior.com/cinelerra.php3.
It is still in Beta code though.
