    I have a few mp3 files ( 170Kbps, 44.1KHz) that I would like to quickly shrink.

As they are just voice recordings, the quality of the output files is not an issue , as long as the voice is still clear.

Which software should I use to batch convert these files ?

All together the files are 801MB and I need to fit them on to a 256MB mp3 player.

    Thank you.

Try WinFF : you just drag your files in the main window, set the output directory and choose your setting for Audio, Mp3 and can adjust the audio bitrate. I think 64kbps is enough for voice, even 32 kbps.

  4. wavelab, soundforge are what I use - any wav editor will generally do. They are good quality . 32 kb sounds really awful , almost unintelligable.

Hello, work out the total length of all your audio. you want to allow that your '256mb' player probably only has about 235mb storage space.

64kb/s mp3 gives around 2 minutes per mb. From these approx calculations you can estimate what bitrate to set in your mp3 encoder program.
