Easy, Affordable Editor For Mac

Hello,

Does anyone know an easy, affordable (under $50) editor for Mac?
It doesn't need all the bells and whistles. I just want very basic editing,
like clipping, joining, adding audio, titles, etc.

I guess iMovie isn't good enough?

You can only import MP4 which is a huge pain in the butt, and it even rejects most of the mp4 videos I have. It's also rigid in the output formats and settings I can do.

It's been one of the most limiting and annoying pieces of software I've ever used.

But rather than debate the merits of iMovie, does anyone have any suggestions?

MPEG StreamClip is a free basic GOP-level editor you could try, although it's hard to recommend something without knowing what formats and containers you need to edit beyond mp4. It needs a paid component from Apple for MPEG-2. I use the Windows version, and it has difficulty with HD video files, I do not know if the same is true for the OS X version.

AviDemux https://www.videohelp.com/tools/AviDemux is another freeGOP-level editor with an OS X version you could try.

...although, as far as I've seen, there currently isn't a build of AVIDemux available that will work on OS X Lion. The OP hasn't specified which version of OS X he is using.

Also, MPEG Streamclip needs the pre-Quicktime X version of the MPEG-2 component to work; Snow Leopard and Lion come with Quicktime X by default, which includes its own version of the functionality of the component - though MPEG Streamclip can't use it.

I think they have ipad apps that do editing. I saw a commercial with an iphone projecting a video on the side of a building, and a bunch of ipods playing music like a symphony.

According to their advertising, i-devices can do it all.

To get AviDemux working on Lion:
Select avidemux2.app in finder, right click and show package contents.
Delete the files libxml2.2.dylib and libiconv.2.dylib from the Contents/Resources/lib folder.

The latest universal binary version available is 2.5.4.

For anything newer than that, you'll have to build it yourself.
