There are so few hardware modems left finding one to support v92 or v44 is kinda hard. Here is what I use though. Its not done me wrong yet.Originally Posted by zzyzzx

The pro version supports v92.

Update: seems there are a few external ones that support v44 out there -
Used to have 1Mb ADSL but moved to an area with only dial-up and even that is only 33k
Hope to have ADSL in the area in February - 2Mb line hopefully.Regards,

I have to have my upload speeds since I'm often sending video samples to videographers for layout approval, and soon will be running a file server and letting them download it from me rather than bother uploading it to them. I also like to host game servers ever so often. As such I need the upload speeds of DSL.
For the longest time nothing was available here. Cable wanted to charge me $3k to run a cable down my 1/4 mile driveway from the street which they said also required a booster. DSLM was too far away still and there are only 3 of us on this spur (though the lines were upgraded and recently buried) so Qwest didn't want to put one in. Satellite dish wouldn't be able to see the south sky with all the trees and putting it on a lightning rod would be certain death here. Finally after a lot of complaints to Qwest they put a DSLM in right between my neighbor and I. Even basic DSL service with them having the DSLM so close is 2Mb down 1Mb up. I pay $50 a month for 4Mb down 2Mb up. Yes, 2Mb up

For home: Cable modem Roadrunner, 4 port linksys router for 3 computers. I like how Time Warner uses scare tactics with consumers who ask about using cable routers.
They tell the consumers it's illegal and if your caught you can have your account closed. Sorry stupid mfers!!!! Like I'm gonna take so much bandwidth away from others. NOT!
351kbps upload, 2530 kbps download.
Work has DSL which is a slow mfer because it's networked for the whole State Dept. My old dial up account was faster than work DSL.

I was thinking that the V44 compression was better than V92. I mean what does V92 get you anyway? A few less seconds to connect initially and an on-hold feature that I wont ever use?Originally Posted by Flaystus
I'd get this one before I'd go for a US Robotics.

All this talk about modems makes me feel like I took a ride in the way back machine to 1994....
"Terminated!" :firing: -
First modem used at work: 300 baud acoustic coupled TI terminal tie-in to Control Data mainframe, when I was writing Fortran code
First modem used at home: 1200 baud that came in a package with the Prodigy start-up kit I bought ...about 1989.
Stone-age stuff

Hardware modem has to do with the controller chip and rather is a full hardware chip or just a on off switch. I've never seen a hardware modem that cheap ever and when it is hardware they will advertise it as such cause its a good selling point.

Say what you will about the Encore modem, but I just left another good review for it on NewEgg. I am connecting at a much better speed that I was before, and add to that the V44 compression, etc it's really much better.Originally Posted by Flaystus
