I have recently downloaded a movie (with xvid & ac3) that was comprised of two 700MB files (about a 2 hour movie). I always make SVCDs and I change the bitrate in TMPGENC so that I can fit the entire movie on two CDRs. This is the first time I've ever downloaded a movie that had two files--usually I d/l files that have one 700MB file for the whole movie.
My question is this: How can I compress these 2 files into one 700MB avi file so that I can encode 2 one hour MPEGs? I tried to just convert each file to its own MPEG, but I would have to make the bitrate only 1150 for it to fit onto two CDs. I'm not sure if I'm making myself clear on my request, so if you don't understand, I can try to make it more clear. I looked in the guides section, but I really didn't see anything that addressed this problem specifically. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!!!

you need to realise that a svcd will fit only a certain amount of TIME per disk. it has nothing to do with the size of the avi you downloaded. if you want to you can go to kvcd.net a take a look at nonstandard svcd.

@acpce1,
i think what secretagent meant is that standard SVCD can only hold so much (about 50 min max) before the quality starts degrading pretty quickly....unless, you don't really care about the quality.
-------
i would suggest you make each .avi file into its own SVCD. they will be much higher quality. -
if they are both avi files, use virtual dub to join them, i find virtual dub mp3freeze to be the best for joining avi files, if they are both mpg files use tmpgenc to join. then exctract wav, then convert, then u will see the fle has shrunk signifigantly

My point is that this video isn't any longer than the normal 700MB avi files I burn. The problem is that it is TWO 700MB avi files, and I want to know how to compress this into ONE 700MB file.
When asking my question, the answer I was looking for is more on the lines of what SIRCOOKS replied:

Again, thanks for your input.[/quote] -
here is the link for joining files in virtual dub.... https://www.videohelp.com/virtualdubedit.htm... im not saying that after you join them that the file will be smaller, but after you convert the file in tmpgenc, that it will be small enough to fit onto whatever disc your trying to get it on

Why join them ?. If you want to put it on 2 disc anyway just convert each avi file to a SVCD mpeg. Then burn each mpeg to disc. You now have a 2 disc SVCD. The fact that you have 2 avi files of 700mb each would suggest that the video will be of superior quality to a single 700mb avi file. Converting it to one 700mb avi file is a waste of time and will also have a detrimental affect to the video quality.

then, simply downloading .mpg from online doesn't necessary mean it's illegal....

same goes if someone "borrows" something from a friend...unless the name of the video is specifically stated...it could easily be a personal work that is being borrowed and not copyrighted movies.
-------
also, if someone is "backing up" a movie, we should assume that the person legally owns a copy of the movie and is just making a personal backup (a la "fair use")...unless the person sez "backing up" movie rented from BB

plz give ppl the benefit of the doubt -
I am totally with you funkman4, but you got to give people the benefit of the doubt. If they don't name the movie, or say where they got it (which you can still get legal movies off of kazaa, not many but some) then you have to give people the benefit of the doubt. The point is we don't know what type of movie it is or where it came from. If you want to know, ask him, and if he says its copyrighted then kick his ass, if he says its not then let it be. Thats about all you can do.
