  2. How does Galaxy Rangers hold up with time (story/plot wise) I remember it being kick ass when I was a kid, but a lot of stuff that I thought was cool (eg. Buck Rogers) is actually crap. Some of it (Battlestar Galactica) thou does hold up?

I got way too much stuff to try and cap it all. My video collection is 20 years of material. Looking to get a DVD recorder to try to preserve some stuff though it's a daunting task as I have 5,000 tapes! What I NEED to preserve is all the one-of-a-kind material like home movies and sci-fi, anime and comic conventions I attended. I do record new stuff though. Lots on currently...maybe too much!

For those interested, I've decided to expand my ATI capture guide into a full site dedicated to restoring cartoons and old tv shows from VHS to DVD. It covers restoration especially, and methods to improve audio and video to as close to DVD as possible, regardless of how it may look or sound on your VCR.

Why make it? Because I'm nice. Well, actually it's because my memory isn't so good sometime, so I need a guide so I don't forget myself! So might as well put it online, not just handwritten notes in my desk. Plus friends asked.

Having gotten 13GB of bandwidth that first month I had the guide, I figured there is probably an audience out there for this kind of thing.

It's not done yet, so don't go clicking and looking for something, but in about a month, lordsmurf.com will be finished, and I'm not aware of any guide or any information out there that is similar to what I am providing.

There's actually a few nice members from this forum and another one helping on the site, and several people even have links going already.

And this time, it covers more than just ATI AIW cards, though I have expanded the ATI guides even more and am using the newest MMC 8.1 (well, almost the newest).

Guides will even be printable in PDF format so you can look them over offline.

I use a PCI ATI AIW 7200 and a AGP ATI AIW DDR32 (7200). My cartoon collection is extremely large, and most of it is recorded from tv or rare limited-release or recalled videos, so it's not something I could just run down to the video store and pick up if I ever lost it. Plus DVDs take up a LOT less space in the video cabinet.

Cartoons is the entire reason I even learned video. 8)

My most recent project was putting together a Transformers G1 Season 3 since Rhino isn't apparently doing one, or at least they've not yet announced it. It looks really nice too (from original recordings and PAL releases). Next, I'm tackling a project of taking original Japanese Transformers DVDs and adding English audio tracks from the Singapore VHS sets so I don't have to read it. That one's gonna take some time! And yes, LordSmurf has almost all of the Smurfs, so I'll get that set finished someday too. Just takes time, especially when you have to learn along the way. Mistakes suck.

Glad to see I'm not the only toon person around here. :P I check up here several times a month, but recently it's just been how to copy DVD's or flame wars.

I'm still undecided on whether I should open up a cartoon conversion forum on the site or just link to the dvdrhelp.com or doom9.org forums. I'm not sure I want to moderate/admin a forum, and I'm not sure about how much storage space or bandwidth a forum would take. Plus, given all the toons traders in the world, I'm not interested in being sued by MPAA for trying to help people learn video because it would probably have lots of trade talks. Not sure what to do on that aspect.

Cartoon video is different that other video, I've learned that much.

And yes, I direct capture a lot these days, though I still record Saturday morning toons on tapes, as I just don't want to get up at 7:30 a.m. on a weekend. No way.

And Teen Titans really sucked, so if you missed it, no loss.

Well, next time I'm back on this site, I hope to have a new site to announce for everybody. Later.

    -LordSmurf (lordsmurf@yahoo.com)

P.S. - If you have some you'd like to see on the site, let me know now, as there is still time to add things... I put my e-mail in the message for this reason... or just respond to this post. Either way. I've bookmarked this page to check back.

Glad to see that you're still going to remain a capper. Hope the site construction is going well. Yeah, I've been into toons of all sorts for over 40 years now. That's growing up time as well as collecting time. Conversion is a pain though. VHS is very difficult, but also doing telecine, Laser, etc. is also a pain. Each format presents different problems. Just looking at some of my toon tapes on 1 shelf: Smurfs, Garfield, Transformers (5 Faces of Darkness), MASK, various Warner Bros. (all Golden Jubilee), Woody Woodpecker, Tin Tin, Asterix, Hanna Barbera (Birdman and the Galaxy Trio), He-Man (original), She-Ra, Thundercats, Mr. Magoo, Tennessee Tuxedo, Underdog, Andy Panda, Top Cat, Atom Ant, etc. Those are all pre-records. That doesn't include all the stuff recorded off-air for the past 20 years. Anime tapes were over 1,700 last I checked some years ago. Those were mostly directly off-air from Japan (started in anime in 1978). It will be good to see what your guides say about transferring this stuff over to DVD. I'm using an AIW 7500 under WIN XP and have tried both AVI and Mpeg direct recording. Labour of love any way you do it...

    Peace man...
