  1. i have just burnt a vcd of an old vhs tape i captured. the quality was not as good as the vhs though.

    I used Divx codec, 320 x 240 at about 20fps, PAL.

To get vhs quality do i need to use a better compession, Pic Video or better (I have space)

Do i need to do at bigger size say 480x 480, but my Virtual Dub does not recognize this size , how do i fix this.

Any help will be appreciated, all i want is to get it onto vcd at vhs quality yo watch on a 68cm tv.

Don't capture to divx, capture to HuffyUV or uncompressed AVI.

For PAL, capture at 25fps, not 20.

Capture at a higher resolution, 352x576 minimum for PAL. VirtualDub can capture at any resolution your capture card can handle. If your card can't do anything higher than 320x240 then you either need better drivers or a different card.

Capture direct to the intended format. If you are not editing, forget all that AVI and Divx nonsense. Sounds like you're just converting existing footage to another format.

Coming from video, best VCD quality is 29.97 fps, 1856k bitrate, and 224 44.1mhz audio, at 352x240 res. No more, nothing less. FYI 1150k is min bitrate, so use 1856 max allowable for standard VCD.

This is a sif 352x240 dvd compliant mpeg1 file. For the mpeg1 file to be standard vcd, the video must be 1150 and the audio 224. The videobitrate for a standard vcd is 1150 no more,no less. The standard vcd spec was later changed to min videobitrate 1150 and max videobitrate 1151.929.

  6. Your settings are guaranteed to REDUCE quality.

Capture at least 352x480, AVI using Pic, Huffy,or no compression ifyou have the space. Less vertical resolution will throw away half of the fields. If original is PAL, use 25 FPS and no IVTC. If original is NTSC, use 29.97 FPS. NOTHING ELSE.

After capture, IF video is TELECINED, do an IVTC. (not for PAL).

Then reduce size to 352x240, IF deinterlacing necessary, I prefer blend. DeInterlace BEFORE resize, IF necessary.

As stated previously, VCD is 1150 CBR. ANYTHING else is non-standard. Higher bitrates will look better, however.

    Consider CVD or SVCD.

Also, a video stabilizer such as Sima Copymaster can improve quality of cap from VHS.
