  2. If you want to capture in real time make sure you use the DivX 3.11 CODEC and not the newer 4.x. I won't go into all of the history, you can visit http://www.divx.com if you want the history and other technical details. The newer version is slower and unless you have a very fast machine you won't be able to capture real time with it.

I capture real time 320x240 30fps using the Microsoft MPEG4V2 codec that DivX is hacked from with no problem. Taking the resolution any higher on my 500mhz machine is an impossibility. If your machine is faster you may be able to capture at a higher resolution real time.

For encoding an existing AVI, just load the AVI in Virtual Dub and select the DivX codec and set the appropriate DivX settings. Select full processing for the video options and save the file. You will also want to select some type of audio compression and full processing for the audio options. When you save the file the new avi will be DivX encoded.

As far as the best setting go, you will need to search the web and do some reading on that. There have been reams of stuff written about it.

  3. Can tmpgenc encode a divx video file into mpeg? I have captured using mpeg4 v2 but tmpgenc 12a doesn't recognize the divx video file. What do I need to do to enable tmpgenc recognize a divx file for encoding to mpeg?
