With these old units, could you use it as a pass-thru to record TV with a set-top PVR? They have commercial advance.

You could try it, But skip commercial was just a gimmick, I don't think it will work as advertised. Also you may run into a problem when recording 16:9 contents, Those machines are designed around 4:3 video frame, So compromises has to be made. Letter box it with black bars on top and bottom and when watched on on a 16:9 TV you will get black bars on all 4 sides of the frame, zoom it to fill the screen and it will look like poop. If your set top box is capable of outputting anamorphic (16:9 squeezed horizontally to fit in a 4:3 frame), record it that way, then later during playback from the VCR set your TV to stretch the frame horizontally restoring the original frame geometry. Keep in mind VHS quality is very low, S-VHS is slightly better but still not even close to 720p or HD.

That "feature" never worked whatsoever. Gimmick to sell the unit. Not that it needed it, the unit had actual features that were solid.
