What's the best file format to use?

I am having success with .avi files, but am wondering if that is the best way to go? Should they be mpeg instead? If so, which (2/3)? And what codec to use?

For DVD-Video (I'm assuming that's what you want since you posted in the authoring DVD subforum) , you only have 1 choice: MPEG2

They don't work directly. DV is a different type of compression. DV-AVI is re-encoded to MPEG2 video stream before authoring, either by your video editor or authoring program before making the DVD

If you meant a DVD data disc (not playable on a regular DVD player, only playable on a computer), then you can leave it as DV-AVI

Thanks. This is going to be a DVD playable on a regular DVD player - NOT a data disk. So the app will do the conversion for me, and I don't need to import MPEG-2 files, is that correct?

It's going to depend on what programs and software you are using.

Some authoring programs only author and cannot encode. In that case you would feed them elementary streams (audio & video) from another encoder . Sometimes you have to do certain things to the audio to make it DVD compliant as well. e.g. Some DV camcorders record audio at 32000Hz, but that's not compliant for DVD . Other programs are "all in one" and do everything for you

I stayed away from this thread when I saw the OP's first post because I realized that he needed a LOT of hand holding and I lacked the interest to do it. No offense, but you are one of the guys with maybe too much patience here so this kind of thing sort of is up your alley.

jaccarrnio - I advise you to think VERY carefully if you are going to continue around here. Copping an attitude when people are trying to help you is a really bad idea if you want to continue to get help, although sanlyn has shown an interest in "lost causes" before and he might continue to help you no matter how big a douchebag you try to be. Yes, DVDA is one of those programs that can re-encode as well, so that everything is compliant for DVD-video

Dude - your post is unwarranted and you sir, are out of line. You have no business saying I had an attitude, regardless of who I was talking to. And don't YOU tell me to answer carefully.
