    what software do i need to convert avi movies to vcd or playable on my home dvd player, anything would be really helpfull Thanks from dumb newbie

    First you will need Vdub, you can use this to edit, cut and check for bad frames, you can also use it to save out the audio if necessary.

    When the AVI is OK, you can then use TMPGEnc to convert it to a mpeg 1, by loading a VCD template (PAL or NTSC)
    http://www.tmpgenc.net/

    Finally you will need some authoring software that will make VCD's like Nero, Easy CD creator, Video pack 5 etc
