Please, I need to learn how to solve or at least lessen the severity of this problem.
My audio track which is comprised of a presentation (all speech) is all over the place in regards to ampitude. I need to "level" out the playing field (both highs and lows) so that it's as even as possible.
From looking at the forum archives it seems I need to apply dynamic compression somehow which will automatically determine the amount of gain needed.
Second option seems to be applying an audio leveler of some sort.
I tried feeding an .avi into avidemux as the audio section there has a filter for dynamic compression and it would not even open up the file whether it was an .avi or .wav file (Yes, I extracted the audio from the .avi file and tried that)
Would any of you please point me in the right direction as far as a software is concerned?
What would you do please?
Thanks so much in advance.

I would use SoundForge for this task. Goldwave and Audacity can do it too, it's just not as easy.

So you can't extract the sound track from the file?

I did extract the audio track out as mentioned above.
Downloaded all of the suggested programs and started with Reaper which has many effects to choose from. Which is right for the mission at hand? Would any of you please give me a brief rundown on the process/steps for that app? I may buy the program for its VST and VSTI functions also.
Thank you for your input and advice.
