OK, I know I was pretty naive but after buying a DVD recorder and trying to back-up my old VHS tapes and finding out that I couldn't because of copy protection, I bought a capture card and hoped to do it that way.
I got all excited because the first two tapes that I did worked after not working the first way through the recorder. But since then every other tape won't. After pressing the record button using WINDVR it stops automatically because of copy protection.
So I guess I have two devices which won't help me and i'm out a fair bit of money! I'll still use them for other things I guess but that was the main reason I bought them, I should have done more research obviously but i'm just wondering as to why some would work and others don't.

Your probably seeing the difference between genuine MV and false MV. Home videos can be affected by this, in that case errors on the tape are interpreted as MV. Some devices are more prone that others, it's as simple as that. MV was what originally brought me to this forum, ironiocally that fact has given me the knowledge to defeat it whether it's the real thing or not ....
Just for example the same tape was completely uncapturable with a ATI AIW, slight problems with a Nvidia VIVO card and no problems with a Canopus ADVC 110. -
The Hauppauge PVR250 pci capture card doesn't see the macrovision signal. It's what I have, and I've converted all my old VHS to DVD with it. I highly recommend it.

Well, a TBC device can help you with fake macrovision

Buy a Full Frame TBC device.
This will give you many benefits on going from VHS to DVD not to mention that a Full Frame TBC will filter out all forms of copy protection ... be the source VHS, DVD or copy protected cable/satellite (which is happening but not common ... yet).
The AVT-8710 is the cheapest at about $190 U.S. Dollars.
Also with the Full Frame TBC you can copy/record anything to the stand alone DVD recorder so no need for the computer based capture solution. If you can return that to save the money.
