im using an ati tv wonder ve and an aiwa 6 head nicam vcr. Im using the compoisite in put to capture. When i capture using virtual dub with the mjpeg codec or the huffyuv codec the quality is crap. I get those annoying tv noise lines and shit. I used various filters off the internet such as smart smoother, but the quality is shit. I usually encode at 480 x 576 (pal) or 352 x 288 (pal). Can any body help me plz!!!

You need to check every part in your setup.
1) The tapes themselves. Are they noisy? Remember Garbage in = garbage out.
2) Have you tested the vcr outside of the capture system? Have you played a tape on the vcr watching it on a tv?
3) The svcd connect is best. Composite is second, but can get noisy if cheap connectors are used close to magnetic fields. Coax is third best, but it can filter out more noise than composite will.
As for noise at the top, bottom, or sides. Most video tapes and vcr's do not cover the entire screen. Since tv's do not show the outer edges vcr's never concerned themselves with being perfect. You can expect to clip off a few lines from any tape captures.
The filters are for post capture processing and will only help small problems. If the capture is really messy then they will most likely be of little use.
