  1. Just curious. Does anyone else have a mobo with a VIA chipset, and experience dropped frames? I haven't installed the latest 4in1 via drivers that are labeled to support XP (oh yea, I'm running XP). I just use the drivers that the OS loaded on. Anyway, with my system I shouldn't be dropping many frames I don't think. Just curoius.

    System:
    AMD 1.2
    512mb pc133 RAM
    60gig 7200 ATA/1000 HD
    AIW Radeon

  2. I have a Shuttle AK31 with VIA KT266A
I've been very carefull installing new drivers. (I've installed XP PRo 4 timers already!)

I have 20% to 25% frames dropped no mater which video resolution and sound and configuration I use (MMC 7.5 and virtual dub so far) when capturing from my Hi8

    hw
    512 MB DDR
    60GB 7200 Maxtor (3 partitions)
    AMD XP 1700+
    ATI AWI radeon

I just intalled the ATI video driver. I have tested with VIA 4.36 (didn't work) and after my last XP resintalation I didn't add the 4.37 anymore.

I've read once that users should unintstall MMC and install it without the file player.

I have a VIA chipset and drop a lot of frames when capturing to AVI in a res over 352x288. I get around this by capturing to MPEG2 up to 480x576 with a bitrate of 8000kbps using Ulead MediaStudio Pro 6.0.
I usually only drop a couple of frames per hour.
    My spec is :-

    Duron 750mhz
    384MB PC133
    13GB ATA66 hard drive
    Hauppauge WINTV card

  5. The VIA chipset has an serious setback relating to PCI bridge timing factors. It does slowdown pci transfers and other issues. Go to http://www.viahardware.com to download the VIA chipset timing patch and install it. It should take care of the problems. It did for me
    Just a thought

  6. Thanks for the tip.
    I checked out http://www.viahardware.com
I couldn't find a "timing patch", but they were talking about a problem with the latency of VIA PCI controllers that is fixed in all 4in1 drivers from 431 and up. Anyway, I got the latest 4in1 and will try it tonight. I'll let you know how it goes

I have VIA chipset also, the only time I had problems dropping frames when capturing was after I upgraded to 2000. I eventually gave up, formatted the drive and installed ME. I have no problems capturing full screen 25fps now. (98SE never caused me any problems either)

I have an ATI AIW 128 PRO. When capturing to mpeg2 it drops 15% of frames, in mpeg1 up to 2500 kbps works perfectly.
Will the patch work for me ?

    Specs.
    Win ME
    Athlon 1ghz
    256mb ram
    7200rpm HD

I have a FIC FA11 mobo with VIA chipset. No problems at all with dropped frames either through firewire or DC30PLUS in 98SE, 2K or XP.

98SE and 2K I use the 4:1 drivers from VIA and in XP the drivers it installs.

I tried to post a reply to this forum question last night but the VCDhelp web site was locked up and wouldn't take it. I guess they were doing maint.

Anyway, I posted a note today that you all should look at called "No Dropped frames" It explains how I fixed my porblems and I have the Via KT133 chipset and have not yet loaded the 4;1 fix.

AS my note says, the dropped frames are not the real issue although they are a symptom of the problem. Read my post and save yourself some time and effort.

  12. OK, I installed the latest recommended 4in1 last night. When you install it on XP it only installs one part of the 4in1, so it's really a 1in1 But anyway, I saw no change in my system at all. Same amount of dropped frames.

Bstansbury, I saw your post. Very interesting. I am not sure though what the essential processes are for XP to leave running in the task manager. I know in 98 it's Explorer and Systray. Anyway, I am eager to try getting rid of some tasks and capturing again.

    Thanks,

I assume you guys are all capturing to a second hard drive, not your system drive, right? Capturing to your system drive is a no no.
B4 you blame VIA, you went through the checklist for tweaking your system for video capturing?

www.videoguys.com has some very good info on tweaking for video capture.

FWIW, I installed my Radeon AIW in a VIA based MB and had nothing but crashes and lock up's with Win ME. The TV on Demand would not work with 2000 or XP at all. ATI could not figure it out.
I finally switched to a sis based MB and the problem seems to be gone.
    Runs pretty good under XP

  14. Nope. I've been capturing exclusivly to my system drive. I have a 60gig ATA/100 system drive. My other drive is a 10gig ATA/66. I just assumed the system drive would be better since it is faster. What's the deal with capturing to the system drive?

Your computer is trying to write to one section of the deive, and meanwhile it's also performing the read/writes it normally does just running the OS. So it has to stop every now and then to take care of business.
Capturing to another HD is something it can do at the same time, so no interuptions.

Please read the info at the site I posted and learn the basics of video capture.

  16. OK then.

Thanks for the reference to videoguys.
I checked it out and they actually recommend 1 drive with different partitions - "We recommend a dedicated 2+ gig hard drive with multiple partitions just for video clips". I have plenty of free space so maybe I will fire up partition magic and see how that works out.

    Just tryin' to learn

"Dedicated" means a completely seperate drive.
But using a seperate partition is better than nothing.

  18. I can capture 640x480 without dropping frames (copy and paste picture to a new window). It drops two frames at the beginning but that's it.
