Hi,
Could anyone tell me if the burning software or the burner used to make a VCD has any bearing on the compatibility with stand alone DVD players.

Yes, it has. Well, not really. If you mean the actual burning, then No. If you include authoring, then yes.
If I author with Nero, my standalone wont play the VCD.
If I use VCDEasy to author, it plays'em fine.
If I let Nero burn the VCDEasy authored CD image or VCDEasys own CD burning tool or any other way to burn the cue/bin doesn't matter.
