  1. Hi,

I know this is a Topic which already was posted very often ...

I copied 2 CDs containing DVIX Movie on my Harddisk, fixed them with Divix Doctor (it gaves me a seperate AC3 file which was included in the Dvix movie). I opened Quicktime put the 2 movie tracks together using copy & paste ... saved the movie (videotrack) as one file to my Harddisk again.
I recognised that this movie runs with a 23.976 NTSC Framerate.

Now ... whats the way to reencode correctly this movie so it works on a NTSC DVD which I want to author with DVD Studio Pro???
I saw that DVD SP only accepts framerates of 25 (Pal) and 29.97 (Ntsc)..
Do I have to reencode the (23.976 fps)-movie at 29.97 fps with the pull-down 2:3 option checked??? Or do I have to reencode the movie at 29.97 and use a program I heared of which is called "mpeg telcine" ???

    Thanks a lot for replies

  3. Well,

I reencoded the 23.976 fps Movie at 29.97 with FFmpegX. After this I used "Telcine" to convert it, bit still no audio sync!!!!

    What can I do??

Do I have to reencode the 23.976 fps movie at 23.976 fps !?!? And then use Telcine.

    Whats the solution????????????

I have the same problem convertin' from a 23.976 fps Divx to a 25 fps PAL CVD... No audio sync (the video finish about 1 minute before audio on a 20 min. movie). I noticed that the video is rightly converted to 25 fps but the audio seems remain at 23.976 fps!!!

On a previous post major told me to run, before ffmpeg, Divx doctor II... But If I do so ffMpeg go crazy (after few minutes of encoding it stops to encode the video part and start to encode the audio track: the result is a "perfectly muxed" CVD with a minute of video and the rest only audio!!!)

    Hi Major!

First, sorry about my wrong suggestion, that FFmpegX doesn't mixdown the audio like a25decX 0.24 does ))

Now to your reply of this thread. I use FFmpegX_0.04k cause the newest version of FFmpegX which contains the "mplayer decode" option won't work on my OSX 10.1.5, does it need 10.2 to run???? It alwas gives me an applescript error if I want to set something in the FFmpegX menue.

    Thanks!!!

  7. @ MacPENTA

    Here's the solution:

Reencode the 23.976 NTSC movie in FFmpegX at 29.97 NTSC!!
Select "keep elementary streams" in the tools window.

After reencoding you will have a m2v and a mp2 file of your project.

The mp2 is ok, don't touch it. Get the applikation "Telecine" from the DVD Helper Tools page (or versiontracker). Watch out, this is a OS9 version, the OsX version is commercial and costs money.
Boot into OS9 and drop your reencoded 29.97 NTSC on the "telecine" appl.symbol. Choose "single large file" and save it.
Now you have a new m2v file which is accepted by DVD SP!!! and will be played with the orig. 23.976 NTSC framerate. And .... now the audio is in sync!!!
Author your DVD as known and burn!
Now enjoy the movie played at correct speed on your stand alone DVD Player.

  8. For what it's worth, I had the same problem as you trying to convert Divx to DVD. Here's what finally worked for me. I used the latest version of ffmpegx to covert the divx file to DVD (m2v and mp2) , using the quick preset tab for NTSC hi-bitrate DVD. I've used only quicktime encoding so far, with it set to NTSC film rate (23.9) and then I make sure to check 3:2 pulldown - that way the frame rate will come out as 29.9 in the end and make sure to check the keep elementary streams tab as well. Though for some reason the ffmpegx authored VIDEO_TS file never seems to work, so I take the m2v file and the mp2 file and drop them into DVDSP and they work just fine after that - no problem with audio sync.

Major - does mplayer give better encoding results than quicktime for divx to DVD?

  9. Hi hayworth!

Well I think TELECINE does it the other way ... a 29.xx to a 23.xx
    and the 3:2 Pulldown from FFmpX a 23.xx to a recognised 29.xx
But ... your solution seems more easy cause everything is done in FFmpX!

I have never really understand the complicated way of a 3:2 Pulldown and the two FPS of movie and Television in the NTSC-"area".
I normally need 25 PAL DVDs cause I live in Germany, but some Movies I get are NTSC Dvix including an original english sound-track an so I author a NTSC DVD wich is also accepted by my stand alone DVD player. In germany we only have 25 FPS, so we don't need Pulldowns etc.
And .... most movies are more authentic with original english voice! ))
Harrison Ford in german is good spoken but the Nicolas Cage german speech for example is not even nearly that good as it is in the original!

So to all ..... HAPPY RE-ENCODING!

23.97 fps is a DVD standard for film. All you have to do when authoring is mark the pulldown box and the DVD player will convert it to 29.97.

You don't need to re-encode it to 29.97 fps

    Well,

I just encoded a 23.97 AVI with FFmpgX at 23.97 FPS (2:3 pulldown option checked).
After encoding including audio FFmpgX gave me 3 files, a m2v, a mp2 and a muxed mpg file.
MPG info says that the mpg file and the m2v file play at 29.97 FPS. Quicktime says 23.97 (the m2v and the mpg version of the movie).
Ok, so the pulldown option worked and by playing the mpg via Quicktime the audio is in sync .... I was HAPPY!

Now, if I import the m2v and the mp2 in DVD SP by previewing the movie it stutters ... ok, first I want to build a test DVD on my HD to test it with the Apple DVD Player .... and, ... when I choose the Video_TS folder .... the movie plays ... audio is in sync, but ... it still stutters!!!
Then I let Quicktime play the VOB file of my Video_TS folder and it plays correct at 23.97!
Does a stand alone DVD player avoid stuttering??? Will he play the movie correct at 23.97 FPS like Quicktime does???
    I ask, cause I don't want to burn a DVD-R media which doesn't work!

The standalone DVD player can't play it at 23.97 fps, your TV can't accept that. The DVD player will take 23.97 in and spit 29.97 out. Most Film DVD's are like this (Film is 23.97 fps), and it's automatic. This is the 3:2 pulldown, and it's setting for the DVD.

You can re-encode to 29.97 fps, with the drawbacks being wasted space(17% more space for the fake frames created to get up to 29.97 fps).

I'd try burning it on a DVD-RW. You should have at least one for testing anyway :P
