I am making home videos with a JVC Mini DV video camera using a firewrie connection. The only software I have is Windows Move Maker and a copy of Ulead Video Studio 5.0. I want the best quality of CD's I can make that can be played in a DVD player and still fit at least about 30 minutes of video on a CD and I don't want quailty worse than a VHS. The problem is I do not want to spend a lot of money on software, so if anyone can help me out it would be appreciated.

  2. Use TMPEG to encode you files, avi., asf., etc. (Freeware) and Nero to burn (Freeware). You can fit 80 min (1hour 20min) on a normal CD-R.

All this software can be found on the left in the TOOLS section

Nero is NOT freeware and TMPGEnc is freeware only for mpeg-1.

  4. You want to play your CD's in a DVD player, then you have to consider not just best quality but also compatibility. If you only want to play them in your existing player, look to the DVD players list on the left and see if your player is listed. This will tell you what formats it will play. If you are lucky and it will play SVCD then thats the way to go, otherwise you might be stuck with VCD which is lower quality.

If you want to maintain compatibility for the future, make sure you stick to the standards or you could replace your player and find you can no longer play your precious home movies.

DaMovieMastarz is right in suggetsing TmpGenc as your encoder, free for mpeg-1 and only $50 or so for mpeg-2 (for SVCD). A bargain.

Burning with Nero should also be fine, but if you already have a burner, chances are that whatever burning software came with it will do the job just as well. Just make sure it can handle burning VCD and/or SVCD formats.

    Hope this helps

  6. crash447,
Not to sound arrogant but your P2 400Mhz CPU is awful for capture and encoding.Your software is fine,do what was said earlier and download VCDEasy and TMPGEnc and you will be able to make high quality (X)VCD's.
